Veda L. Graves, 85 of Payson, IL died Sunday November 18, 2018 at the Good Samaritan’s Home in Quincy. She was born on January 3, 1933 south of Time, IL in the Hardin Township to Everett Kenneth and Alma Leona (Smith) Willard. She married Donald Eugene Graves on May 19, 1951 and he preceded her in death on May 10, 2017.

She is survived by a son, Roger Mark (Sharon) Graves of Liberty, IL and a daughter, Teresa Diane (David) Higus of Terre Haute, IN; six grandchildren, Crystal Ann (Steve) Dieterle of Quincy, IL, Roger Mark (Jessie) Graves II of Chatham, IL, Katie Elizabeth (John) Ohnemus of Mendon, IL, Matthew Allen Graves of Liberty, IL, Eric David Higus of Washington, IL and Timothy Adam (Eleanor) Higus of Peoria, IL; seven great grandchildren, Kaleb Austin and Zoey Faith Dieterle, Olivia Grace and Paisley Elizabeth Ohnemus and Tatum Jacqueline and Cru Asher Graves and Johnathan Eric Higus. Also surviving is an uncle, Don Smith of Quincy, IL and a brother in law, Greg (Mae) Graves, a special friend, Marilyn Smith of Keller, TX and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant sister, Darlene Joy Willard, a brother, Wayland W. Willard, a sister in law, Mary Catherine Capps , a nephew, Michael Willard and a sister in law, Rosemary Graves.

In 1952 Veda worked at the Ben Franklin store at the candy counter in Pittsfield shortly after she married Donald. She volunteered and worked for the Red Cross blood drives for 5 years and delivered Meals on Wheels for 12 years. She was in charge of scheduling at Payson Town Hall and a member of Payson Congregational United Church of Christ and a member of Women’s Fellowship and the Couple’s Club. She served as Church Clerk and was on several other committees over the years. In earlier years she was a good cook and wasn’t afraid to try new recipes. She loved to piece and hand quilt quilts and doing counted cross stitch and crocheting. She also enjoyed country music and word game books.  Veda was a person who always sent greeting cards to family and friends and she espcially loved the holidays and getting ready for the family to arrive.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry with Reverend Steve Disseler officiating with burial at Pittsfield West Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be from 11:00 – 1:00 P.M. prior to the service on Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to Pittsfield West Cemetery or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. The Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry is in charge of the arrangements.
