Music by The Piano Brothers

Walter F. Rick, age 93, of Varna, IL formerly of Griggsville, IL passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Home in Lacon, IL.  He was born on March 31, 1925 in St. Louis, MO to Jack and Irene Wallimann Rick.  He married Ruth Shaw on January 18, 1945 in Pittsfield, IL and she preceded him in death on May 7, 2012.

Walter joined the United States Army on November 9, 1944, a member of the 532nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment.  He was also part of the Calvary Unit and served under General MacArthur.  Walter was Honorably Discharged on February 26, 1947.  He farmed, worked at Brown Shoe Factory, Alton Olin Industry, and Ideal Hardware, where he serviced plumbing, heating, and electrical.  There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do; Walter was a jack of all trades.  He also loved working with wood and his greatest accomplishment was building two grandfather clocks made entirely out of wood so Trish and Sharon could each have one.  Walter was also a water witcher, known as dousing, for finding water to dig a well.  He had a lot of talents, playing several musical instruments and self-taught himself to play the organ.  Walter was a man of few words and had a great sense of humor.  He enjoyed music and greatly loved his family.  He will be dearly missed.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Rick of Louisiana, MO and Sharon (Lloyd) Benz of Varna, IL; three grandchildren, Gary (Laura Lenz) Benz, Kevin (Ginger) Benz, and Sandy (Rockie) Harber, all of Lacon, IL; five great grandchildren, Jessica Button, Morgan (Brad) Nelson, Cody (Marnae Hunt) Benz, Sadie Benz, and Devin Benz; three great great grandchildren, Hadley Button, Lucas Cajthaml, and Renlee Benz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents; a brother, Edward Rick; sister, Helen Daniels; and one uncle, Walter Wallimann.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield.  Interment will follow at Greenpond Cemetery.  There will be a visitation prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph’s Home, 401 9th St., Lacon, IL  61540.  Online condolences may be left to the family a www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
