Rokita J. Shelton, 78, of Pittsfield, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Eastside Healthcare and Rehabilitation with her daughters at her side, after an extended stay at St. Johns Hospital.  She was born on December 28, 1938 in New Canton to Floyd and Geneva Ballinger Hurshman.  She married Richard Shelton on December 1, 1960 in Louisiana, MO and he preceded her in death on March 13, 2008.

Rokita graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1957.  Later she attended Quincy College and received an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood in 1981.  She waitressed at various restaurants in Pittsfield, then went on to work at the P.N. Hirsch store.  She also worked for Wayne Wahlbring, whom she loved working for, at the Pittsfield Hardees and became a manager there.  Rokita then became a teacher's aide at West Pike and also worked at East Pike before finishing her teaching career in Pittsfield.  During that time she worked at Stark Brother's in the office and in the early 90's she worked evenings at the Kepley House.  Then she went on to become an activity director at the Pittsfield Manor and stayed there for 10 years before moving to work at Eastside Healthcare and Rehabilitation where she retired in March of 2016.  She was a shining example of hard work, perseverance, kindness, independence, and loyalty to everyone whose lives she touched.   Rokita loved to sew and made most of her children's clothes when they were growing up.  She also had quite the green thumb and enjoyed flower gardening.  She had a passion for genealogy and travelled with cousin, Berta to many historical sites.  Rokita was a huge supporter of all school activities; you could say she was the epitome of "Saukee Pride" along with her sports buddy, Toby Elledge.  She was an avid sports fan, following the WNBA and NBA, and quite a stat keeper.  She also enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren's sporting events.  She followed her granddaughter, Marla, in college basketball and didn't miss any of her senior year games.  She also liked to watch the Olympics and she spent many hours with her good neighbor, Monica.  Rokita was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and an attendant in the nursery.  She was a member of Pittsfield Post #152 Ladies Auxiliary, the Pittsfield Moose Lodge, the Red Hat Society, and the DAR. She also was a past board member of JWCC.  She was a beloved neighbor and friend to so many in our community, but her family was held before all else.

Survivors include six children, Tammy (Melvin) Gilbert of Barry, Steve Shelton of Dallas, TX, Toy (Troy) Hendricks of Lakewood, CO, Tracy (Laura Pierce) Shelton of Pittsfield, Scott Shelton of Denver, CO, and Stacie (Brad) Willard of Pittsfield; eleven grandchildren, Chris (Sara) Gilbert, Samuel (Melena) Gilbert, Megan Shelton, Terrell Cayo, Bree (Christopher) Madigan, Ryne (Rhea) Shelton, Ty (Mai) Shelton, Emma Shelton, Nolan (Angie) Willard, Austin Willard, and Marla Willard; thirteen great grandchildren, Max Gilbert, Henry Gilbert, Eliza Jane Gilbert, Airess Giovingo, Chloe Slaviero, Landon Madigan, Brinkley Madigan,  Anthony Shelton, twins Rosemarie Shelton, Loretta Shelton, Marin Shelton, Raleigh Willard, and Norie Willard; one brother, Donald (Nedra) Hurshman; three nephews and one niece.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Shelton; one infant son, George; a grandson, Cale Shelton; and a grandson-in-law, Jason Cayo.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 25, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Pastor Michael TenEyck officiating.  Burial is at Shearer Cemetery in New Canton.  Visitation will be Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Eastside Activity Fund or Shearer Cemetery.  Online condolences may be left at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home has been entrusted with the services.

I was sad to hear of Rokita's passing. I worked with her and Tammy at Lincoln Inn many, many years ago. She was a good role model and hard worker. My condolences to the family. It sounds like she enjoyed life and was an inspiration to all of you.

To all of Rokita's family, my sincere sympathy. I remember her as such a good example of a true Christian lady. She so loved all her family. My apology not knowing of any illness.
Rokita was so kind and patient with the very young thru all ages to the elderly.
She truly was one who could make lemonade if handed lemons and would welcome the rain on her parade knowing there would be a rainbow for her to enjoy when the rain stopped!
My prayer for you is there be many warm and pleasant memories to comfort and sustain you. Everyone knows the love of God she had, as now she will be reaping her reward.
