Lucy Strubinger Obituary

Lucy M Strubinger, age 96, of Barry, IL, passed away on Friday April 12, 2024, in Barry, IL.  She was born on April 7, 1928, in Timewell, IL to Wendell and Gladys Nokes Bradney.  Lucy married Clifford Lee Strubinger on January 21, 1951, at the Timewell Christian Church and he preceded her in death on January 11, 2000.

Lucy attended school in Timewell, IL until her senior year, graduating from Brown County High School in Mt. Sterling, IL.  She went on to attend the St. Johns School of Nursing and graduated with a Registered Nursing Degree.  While Clifford served his country, Lucy lived in Quincy and worked at St. Mary’s Hospital.   After Clifford returned home, they moved back to the Barry area.  Lucy worked at the Barry Community Care Center, then did home health care for the Pike County Health Department, and some private duty nursing at Illini in Pittsfield.   She finished her working career at the Barry Community Care Center, becoming Director of Nursing, retiring in the early 90’s.    Lucy was a member of the Barry Baptist Church where she was very active over the years, teaching Sunday School and playing the organ and piano.  She was an advocate to get children to church and blessed them with her self-taught music abilities, teaching them to sing and introducing them to her many string instruments.  She helped organize a church singing group, ‘The Jammers’ and they would perform at local churches and nursing homes.  Besides her church, she was very involved in the Barry Saddle Club where she made many lifelong friendships.  Lucy also enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting.  Lucy and Clifford loved to go camping, always enjoying their trips to Siloam Springs and Mountain View, Arkansas.  She also liked to exercise, go shopping, and work crossword puzzles.  She had a strong love for music, but her family was her prized possession.  She was an ambitious, tough, hardworking woman that was compassionate and had a huge heart.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

Lucy is survived by three sons, Robert (Charli) Strubinger of Liberty, IL, Thomas (Tina) Strubinger of Hannibal, Mo, Todd (Amy) Strubinger of Barry, IL; one daughter, Susan (Dennis) Landis of Quincy, IL; ten grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; one sister Mary Keller of Quincy, IL; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clifford; one daughter, Jenny; one great-grandson, Ronnie Ackland; two brothers, Carl (Betty) Bradney and Virgil ‘Easy’ Bradney; in-laws, Don Keller, Glen and Lil Strubinger, Michael and Betty Strubinger, John and Lois Huelskoetter.
