George W. Sherman, Jr., 82 of Springfield, formerly of Pike County, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at his residence. George was born in Detroit Township in Pike County on May 6, 1934, a son of the late George W. and Marie Ann Dobey Sherman, Sr. and was lovingly called "Junior" by is family throughout his life.
In earlier years George worked at Ackles and Penstone Apple Orchards and later retired from Oscar Mayer Meat Processing plant after nineteen years as a meat processor. He was of the Catholic faith.
George spent the last fifteen years living close to family in Springfield but always considered Pike County his home. Being raised as a country boy George enjoyed deer, rabbit and squirrel hunting, fishing, mushrooming and gardening. Camping, 4-wheeling, and traveling with his family was an enjoyment to him. George especially loved attending St. Louis Cardinal baseball games with his nephews and thought the world of his companion, "Barney", his beagle.
Survivors are his sister, Rose (Terry) Jack of Dawson, IL; two nephews, James Sherman, Jr. of Pittsfield and Joe (Tami) Hardwick of Chatham; great nephews, Michael, Aaron and Stephen Hardwick; a great niece, Elizabeth Hardwick and a sister-in-law, Virginia Sherman of Pittsfield. George was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, James Sherman, Sr., Howard Sherman and Marvin Sherman.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at the Calvary Cemetery in Pittsfield with Deacon Michael Scott officiating. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to be made to Calvary Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.nieburfh.com. The Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield has been entrusted with the service.
