William B. Coates, age 66, of Jacksonville, IL passed away Saturday, May 21, 2022 at his home. He was born on March 19, 1956 to Bernard William and Mary Virginia Kampman Coates in Mattoon, IL. He married Evelyn Foster on September 7, 1991 in New Canton, IL, and she survives.
William graduated from Mattoon High School in 1974 and went on to attend Lakeland College where he received an associate’s degree in engineering in 1979. He went to work for the Illinois Department of Transportation in 1981 and then in 1983, he began working for Freesen Inc./UCM, and continued working until his death.
William was an active member of the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, IL. He was also a member of the Elks and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as financial secretary. He was passionate about making things and always had a project going on whether it was woodworking, tinkering in his shed, or working on his jeep. He liked to stay busy and enjoyed going to watch Nascar, hanging out with friends, and having a drink along with good conversation – those that knew him well knew he was the life of the party. William will be remembered as being focused, hardworking, and driven. He was also a jokester and loved to ham it up, but most of all, he was a proud father and devoted family man.
William is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn Coates; son, Thomas Coates of St. Louis, MO.; daughter, Emily (Ryan Brannan) Coates of St. Louis, MO; sisters, Judy Hastert of Palatine, IL, Kathy (Earl) Armstrong of Mattoon, IL, Pat (Allen) Drake of Sullivan, IL, and Chris (Gary) Swisher of Arcola, IL; his mother-in-law, Emma Foster of Barry, IL; his brother-in-law, Kenny (Doris, deceased) Foster of Rockport, IL; his sisters-in-law, Debbie (Jerry) Epley of Hull, IL, Becky (Kevin) Keithly of Hull, IL, and Sharon (Jim) Beardsley of Hull, IL; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Mary Coates; sister, Sue Coates; father-in-law, Lee Foster; and brother-in-law, Bill Hastert.
Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 12:00 PM at Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, IL with a visitation held prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the church. A graveside service will be held later that afternoon on Wednesday at 3:00 PM at Shearer Cemetery near New Canton, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
