Werner Von Burg III Obituary

Werner Edward Von Burg III, age 77, formerly of Barry, IL passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. He was born September 16, 1946, in Quincy, IL to Werner and Ada Lowe Von Burg. Werner married Tammy Potter on September 22, 1988, in Hannibal, MO and she survives.

Werner graduated from Unity High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in Jan 1966 and meritoriously served in Vietnam until his honorable discharge in May 1969. Werner took great pride in his three sons' continued service to our country, having all three served or currently serving in the Air Force. He earned an associate degree in Criminology and worked for the Illinois State Police from 1971 to 1979; working most of his career in District 3. He went on to own and operate The Copper Kettle in Quincy, as well as owning and operating an antique furniture restoring business, The Wood Doctor. Werner finished his career working in the highway construction industry for several years before retiring in 2009. Werner was a funny, positive, and charismatic man who was intelligent, creative, cheerful, and always paid attention to details. Werner ‘lived to laugh’ and never shied away from getting excitement out of others.  Known for tolerating and reciprocating half-truths and pure lies, he could tell a story like no other; some would say he had a PhD in “BS”. Werner was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, mushroom hunt, garden, and share his bounty with others. He always took delight in spending time with his family and greatly enjoyed family fish frys.

Werner is survived by sons, Werner (Ashley) Von Burg IV of Hooper, UT, Jon (Rebecca Sandbothe) Von Burg of Hull, IL and Cody Von Burg of Glen Burnie, MD; daughters, Dawn (John) Keller of St. Paul, MO, Jennifer Von Burg of Quincy, IL and Kristi Austin of Quincy, IL; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother, Mike Von Burg of Springfield, IL; sister, Kathy Archambo of Arenzville, IL; several nieces and nephews; his dog, Rocky and “granddogger”, Remi also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Werner and Ada (Lowe) Von Burg; brothers, Jim Von Burg, Arthur Von Burg and Robert Von Burg; and sisters, Joann Gilliland and Mary Jean Daughterty.
