Warren Dee Winston, age 83, of Pittsfield, IL passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at Liberty Village in Pittsfield. He was born October 4, 1940, in Quincy, IL to Hazen Churchill and Bessie Martha Large Winston.
Warren graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1958 and graduated with BS in Pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He began his career as a pharmacist at Aldrich Drug Co in 1958, then became owner of Winston’s Pharmacy in 1967. Warren took great pride in restoring the 1880 pharmacy in 1975 and becoming the first computerized pharmacy in the United States. Later in life, he worked as a contract pharmacist at federal bureau of prisons and former pharmacist at Tohono O’Odham Reservation Clinic as the first pharmacist hired by the Tribe. Warren achieved many accolades and contributed to many organizations throughout his lifetime locally, nationally and internationally. Warren was the first recipient awarded the John Philip Sousa award at PHS, a member of Pittsfield Jaycees, Pittsfield Lions Club and Pike County Theater Guild. Warren also served as a prior president, current board member and charter member of Pike County Historical Society. He contributed articles to several publications including St. Louis Post Dispatch, Quincy Herald Whig, Chicago Daily News and Illinois Times. Warren gave an account to a local paper of Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral and interviewed numerous noted people including Salvador Dali, Albert Speer, Tibetan Monks and Walt Disney. Many friends close to Warren benefitted from his ideas, energy and resolve to complete a project. Warren will be missed by many friends but will not be forgotten by those who knew him.
Warren is survived by brother, Lee Large Winston; stepsister, Marjorie Penstone Gamble; nieces, Dawn Winston Turley, Hope (Carl) Szabo and Faith (Ron) Winston Yannor; six Penstone great nieces and nephews, including local step-nieces, Lisa Penstone Leahy and Julie Penstone Myers; childhood friend, Thomas Bunting; dear friend, Rebecca Acuff; and longtime faithful employee and caretaker, Bobby Jo Smith.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hazen Churchill Winston; mother, Bessie Martha Penstone; stepfather, Frank E. Penstone, Sr.; stepsiblings, Frank E. Penstone, Jr., Carl Penstone, Harold Penstone and Mary Penstone Mann; and special nephew, Bruce Penstone.
Prayer Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Bethel Cemetery and Celebration of Life will follow the prayer service at Historic East School at 2:00 PM for friends and family.
