Thomas McCarter, age 90, of Griggsville, IL passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023, at his home surrounded by family. He was born October 15, 1933, in Pittsfield, IL to Joseph and Ellen Doyle McCarter. Tom married Adeline Lee Test April 4, 1964, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pittsfield and she survives.
Tom attended school in Pittsfield, he attended Higbee and earned his GED with the Class of 1953. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1951. He served in the Korean War and was a disabled veteran. Tom was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal with 2 stars and U.N. Service Medal. Tom served as Griggsville Police Chief for several years. He attended University of Illinois Police Training Institute graduating Top of Class at age 49. Tom also served as Pike County Deputy, Jail Administrator and Bailiff. Tom was an avid Notre Dame football fan and enjoyed the trip to South Bend with the boys to see a game. He was also a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Tom coached several Little League teams, played church summer league and was a Boy Scout leader in his younger years. Tom was an usher at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of Knights of Columbus.
Tom is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lee McCarter of Griggsville, IL; three sons, Tom McCarter, Tony McCarter and Aaron McCarter, all of Griggsville, IL; thirteen grandchildren, Ashley, Keagen, Trevor, Travis, Justin, Brad, Heather, Troy, Ivy, Katy, Tina, Autumn and Adreanah; six great grandchildren, Derek, Remington, Briar Thomas, Paxton, Pierson and Willow Rose; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ellen McCarter; siblings, John Roy, Charles Marcus, Vernon Earl, Eugene Doyle, Joseph James, Merle Edward, Carl William, Mary Rose, Elizabeth Ellen, Helen Marie and Freda Mae; and granddaughter, Michala Rose McCarter
Cremation rites have been accorded and Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, January 15, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Memorials are suggested to be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Knights of Columbus. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
