Thelma D. Hammitt, age 104 of Milton, IL passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at her home. She was born in Montezuma, IL August 23, 1920, to Daley M. and Clara E. Durr Renoud. Thelma first married Franklin Dale and he preceded her in death during WWII in April 1943. After his passing, she married Paul Hammitt July 20, 1951, in Pittsfield, IL and he preceded her in death February 16, 1990.
Thelma attended school in Alton and went on to beauty school obtaining her license but being a homemaker was her true profession. She and Paul lived in New York for about 10 years where she taught 1st grade Sunday School and later moved to Decatur before moving back to Pike County. Thelma enjoyed sewing and vegetable gardening and canned her produce to share with family and friends. She also was a wonderful cook who liked to bake Mississippi Mud cakes and was well known for her delicious mac and cheese. Thelma was a member of Milton Christian Church, where she belonged to the Ladies Aid Group, and belonged to the Montezuma Club. She and her dear sister, Florine were avid after Christmas shoppers. Thelma took great pride in decorating her home and was a spunky, kind, and helpful lady who dearly loved her family.
Thelma is survived by son, Craig Hammitt of Milton, IL; stepdaughter, Barbara Hussey of Georgia; seventeen grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren; forty-two great great grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Verla Dale and Martha Dale; son-in-law, Robert Coleman; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Daley and Clara Renoud; husbands, Franklin Dale and Paul Hammitt; sons, Larry Dale and Terry ‘Ted’ Dale; stepdaughter, Brenda Coleman; stepson-in-law, Jack Hussey; grandchildren, Matt Hussey and Eddie Coleman; and sister, Florine Webster.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Niebur Funeral Home with visitation held prior to the service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Interment will follow the service at Smith Cemetery in Milton, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to Smith Cemetery or East Pike Fire Protection District.
