Susan Ruble Deeder, commonly known as “Susie,” “Suz,” or “Cotton,” but most importantly “mom” and “grandma Suz” passed away peacefully in her home joining our Father in Heaven on Thursday February 6, 2025. And by Heavenly Father we mean God, not Dave, but we sure hope he’s there too.
Born one day shy of the Fourth of July Susie exploded into the world like the true firecracker she was on July 3, 1969, in Pittsfield, IL to David and Carolyn Ruble. As the middle of three children Susie had an ornery side; together with her siblings and their shenanigans, behaviors, and attitudes—they successfully drove their father to drink.
A child at heart, her heart was bigger than life itself. Susie never met a dog, or any other animal she didn't like; the same couldn’t be said for people unless they were an underdog and then she became their biggest cheerleader and advocate. She asked not to be described as someone who lit up a room; yet her smile and laughter undeniably lifted spirits of those around her and often left us wondering what was going on in that brain of hers.
Susie’s proudest moment was becoming a mom to Zach and Sam. She finally made an honest man out of their dad, marrying Monte Deeder on November 23, 1996, and became a bonus mom to Nikki and Britini.
Enjoying the small things in life, Susie spent time reading, watching movies, bursting into spontaneous song (it didn’t matter if the lyrics were correct), losing herself in countless crafting projects, feeding birds, anxiously awaiting the return of “her” hummingbirds each year, and frequently adopting dogs. Susie loved spending time with her kids, going to Rutledge with Monte along with their travels to Arkansas, Oregon and South Dakota, contemplating adopting more dogs and getting a little crazy on her girls’ trips. Above all, her favorite memories centered around her children—taking them to the zoo, visits to Santa, and carving Halloween pumpkins together.
Susie found joy in decorating for holidays and planting flowers, work that sometimes had to be repeated thanks to the dogs and chickens that freely roam the yard. Wildflowers were her favorite, which makes complete sense as many symbolize strength, perseverance, calmness, integrity, and the ability to overcome challenges with grace, which echo the traits she embodied beautifully. For those of us blessed to truly know Susie, we must also add unknowingly funny, selfless, resilient, loving, and completely loved in returned.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, David and Carolyn Constable Ruble; and in-laws Kermit and Audrey Deeder. She is survived by her husband Monte Deeder of Griggsville; son Zach (Haelee) Deeder of Barry; daughters Samantha (Gavin) Deeder of Jacksonville, Nikki (Roger) Liehr of Perry, Britini Deeder of Pittsfield; three grandchildren Holden Deeder, Kale Liehr and Reese Liehr; siblings Greg Ruble of Pittsfield and Hope (Brandon) Moore of Northwest Arkansas; brothers-in-law Pete (Shelby) Deeder and Dave (Teresa) Deeder; sister-in-law Martha Hull; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
