Rosemary Smith Obituary

Rosemary Morrow Smith, age 80, of Quincy, Illinois, and formerly of Barry, Illinois, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2025. She was born on March 18, 1944 in Rockport, Illinois, to Sarah Harriett (Howland) and Joseph Eugene Morrow.

She attended Liberty and Rockport grade schools but attended Barry High School and graduated in 1963. At 40 years old, Rosemary went to John Wood Community College and received her Associate of Applied Science Degree as a Medical Secretary.

Her first marriage was to Michael Herzog on June 25, 1973. She had three daughters and divorced in October 1980. She married Robert Dean Smith on April 14, 1984.

 Rosemary worked at Trio Manufacturing Company in Griggsville, Motorola in Quincy, Ben Franklin and Gray’s Chevrolet in Pittsfield, and the State of Illinois Department of Public Aid in Pittsfield and Quincy. She retired from the State of Illinois in 2000. During her 20 years of service for the State of Illinois, Rosemary was a Clerk Typist II, Data Input Operator, Caseworker II, and at the time of retirement was the Office Administrator Clerical Supervisor. 

She was an AFSCME Retiree Member and a State of Illinois Association Member. In 2004 Rosemary started a Barry chapter of The Red Hat Society and kept it going through 2015. She was a member of the Christian Church of Barry.

Rosemary especially liked to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren reading and playing cards. She loved to dance and listen to music, especially Elvis Presley and Alan Jackson.

She is survived by;  three daughters, Gina (Derek) Hulett of Germantown Hills, IL, Stephanie (Kevin) Sydenstricker of Palmyra, MO, and Gayle (Michael) Brinkman of Chapin, SC; four stepdaughters, Stacy (Gary) Nation, Kelly (Ed) Wood, Laurie (Jay) Brace, and Bethany Murphy;  two stepsons, Craig Smith and Todd (Kelly) Smith; two granddaughters, Ashley (Dalton) Kroeger, and Gracie Brinkman; seven grandsons, Jacob (Michelle) Hulett, Joshua Hulett, and Justin Hulett, Austin (Paige) Fish, Jackson Brinkman, and Tyler Sydenstricker and Christopher Sydenstricker; and three great grandchildren, Aubree and Jace Webster, and Daxtyn Kroeger.

She was preceded by; her spouse, Robert Smith; parents, Joseph and Sarah Morrow; brothers, Wilbur, William (Bill), Joseph (Joe), and Richard Morrow; and sisters, Nancy Morrow, Erma Claus, Bernice Grimsley Saxbury, Kathy Reynolds, and Minnie Cooper.

The service will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 11:00 am at Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry IL with a visitation prior from 10-11:00 am.  Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Rosebud Medical Fund for extraordinary medical expenses for Rosemary's grandchildren.
