Robert Joseph Ring

Robert ‘Bob’ Joseph Ring, age 70 of Pittsfield, IL passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born April 20, 1955, in Jacksonville, IL to Robert J. and Mary E. Farrell Ring. Bob married Peggy L. (Winston) Ottwell December 12, 2009, at their home and she survives.

Bob was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and went on to Illinois College, obtaining his bachelor’s degree. Bob worked for the Jacksonville Area Rural Newspapers for 10 years. He later obtained his teacher’s certificate from MacMurray College, and student taught in the Meredosia Chambersburg school district. Bob then began his career at Pittsfield High School teaching English for over 25 years until his retirement in 2011. He was a stubborn but fun-loving man who loved his students and truly enjoyed teaching. He took delight in wearing his Hawaiian attire to indicate the coming of the end of the school year. Bob was president of Pikeland Unit #10 Teacher’s Union for several years, coached the Quiz Bowl team, was a past member of Pittsfield Moose Lodge, and in earlier years enjoyed golfing. Bob always enjoyed a cold beverage, good political debate, and spirited conversation with friends. He was an avid music lover of all genres including country, classical, and classic rock. Bob and Peggy loved to travel over the years to many destinations and attend blues concerts together.

Bob is survived by wife, Peggy Ottwell of Pittsfield, IL; stepchildren, Lee Ann (Roger) Pepper and Eric (Gloria) Ottwell; four step grandchildren; and ten step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Ring; and in-laws, Roy and Eileen Winston.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and a Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to Ty Rylander Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield is handling the arrangements.
