Richard 'Dick' Keller Obituary

Richard Glen “Dick” Keller of Vernon Hills, IL passed away on Saturday December 16, 2023, with his daughter and granddaughter by his side.

Born in 1929 to Glen B. Keller and Catherine M. Jackson in Cleveland, Ohio, Dick grew up during the depression when a half a piece of toast and a cup of coffee was considered a hearty breakfast. He was an accomplished athlete playing football, baseball, and hockey and in later years became an excellent bowler, a sharp pool player and a persistent student of the game of golf.

Dick put himself through college at Case Institute of Technology and started his career as a civilian engineer at Wright Patterson AFB. He subsequently realized his dream of flying when he was accepted into the USAF Aviation Cadets program, launching his career as an Air Force pilot and engineer.  Dick’s USAF career included a tour in Vietnam flying both the A-26 and C-123 missions where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.  Although distinguishing himself as a pilot, Dick loved engineering, working on the J58, SR-71, and B1 engines as a propulsion test engineer.  After retiring from the Air Force, Dick continued his engineering career with General Electric where he developed test stands for icing, hail, and rain used to certify aircraft engines, making a significant contribution to the safety of air travel that we enjoy today. In his retirement years he volunteered his engineering expertise at Delta Hawk in Racine Wisconsin. Throughout it all, he continued flying his beloved Baron.

Dick was incredibly accomplished in his career, but his legacy is the love of his family. In 1956 he married Ruth Ann Peecher and they had five children, twelve grandchildren and one great grandson.  Their motto, “with faith in God and each other,” carried them through life’s ups and downs and provided a foundation for a loving family.  Nothing made him happier than a good meal, a glass of wine (or margarita) followed by a game of cards. Dick had a sly sense of humor, was generous, humble and was dearly loved.

Dick is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth and his daughter, Susan Ava.  He is survived by his sons, Michael (Terry) and David (Barb); his daughters, Ann and Mari (Dale); his son-in-law, Carleton (Tina); his grandchildren, Rebecca, Julie, Hallie (Erik), Elizabeth, Andrew, Luke (Jenny), Seth, Jonathan, Caroline, Abigail, Reanna, and Bryan; and his great grandson, Sam.

Dick will be laid to rest beside his wife in the Summer Hill, Illinois cemetery at 11:00 AM on March 23, 2024, at which time a celebration of life service will be held.
