Peggy Cawthon Obituary

Peggy A. Cawthon, age 73, of Chambersburg, IL passed away Thursday, October 31, 2024, at her home. She was born January 10, 1951, in Pittsfield, IL to Raymond ‘Jolly’ and Shirley L. Buchanan Smith. Peggy first married Ron Martin and he preceded her in death, she then married Wayne Cawthon in 1973, and he survives.

Peggy was a 1969 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She obtained her CNA license and later became the nursing home administrator until her retirement in 2016. Peggy enjoyed crocheting, and needlework. She especially loved tending to her flower and vegetable garden and spending time outdoors fishing and mushroom hunting. Peggy was a private person who loved her family dearly and always put everyone else first. She will be deeply missed by her family.

Peggy is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Wayne Cawthon; stepson, Todd (Amber) Cawthon of Browning, IL; grandchildren, April (Chris) Bolt, Jordan (Rachel) Cawthon, and Zachary (Paige Sergerson) Cawthon; great grandchildren, Brynlee Bolt, Drayson Bolt, Owen Markert, Carson Cawthon, Ella Cawthon, and Ryker Cawthon; brothers, Mitch Smith and Larry (Bonnie) Smith; sisters, Gayle Morrow and Lois Calvey; in-laws, Jack Cawthon, Larry (Judy) Cawthon, and Karen (Bob) Dehart; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jolly and Shirley Smith; daughter, Amy Malone Hord; brothers, Charles ‘Chuck’ Smith and Michael ‘Mike’ Smith; and nephew, Joey Calvey.

Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no services. Memorials are suggested to be made to Blessing Hospice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield is handling the arrangements.
