Patty Curry Obituary

Patty Lynn Curry, age 63, courageously fought a 10-year battle with Multiple Myeloma and peacefully passed away on Saturday March 16, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO surrounded by her family.  She was born on March 26, 1960, in Louisiana, MO to Jerald and JoAnn Borrowman Hill.  Patty married John Curry on November 13, 1982, at the Nebo Nazarene Church and he survives.

Patty graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1978 and then obtained her cosmetology license from the Beauty School at Gem City in Quincy, Illinois. She then spent a year at Olivet Nazarene University before returning to Nebo, IL where she purchased her first beauty shop, which was named ‘Patty’s Beauty Shop’.  Upon marriage, Patty relocated her beauty shop to rural Griggsville, IL by building an addition onto their home. Patty enjoyed visits with her regular customers as well as the local farmers that would pop in for quick haircut. Patty always went above and beyond to accommodate her customers’ schedules. In 1990, she also started providing childcare on a small scale to fulfill a need in the community and provide companionship to her youngest daughter when her oldest started kindergarten. This quickly transformed into a full-time licensed daycare, providing quality, loving care for the 60 plus children that passed through her home in her 22 years of service. Patty was also a big part of the family farming business, in the spring and fall she enjoyed bringing meals to the field and catching a ride on the combine with her husband.  In 2015 she became partner and bookkeeper for Curry Family Farms, which was a job she loved.

Patty’s love language was feeding her people. She was a fantastic cook, a gift she inherited from her mother. Some of her specialties were her homemade apple pie, frozen applesauce, lasagna, and her sweet corn that was always a staple at family or church dinners. Not only did Patty love to cook, but she also grew an impressive garden and canned produce to provide fresh farm-to-table meals for her family throughout the years. Patty was very proud of her strawberry patch and enjoyed sharing the success of her patch with friends and family. As the progression of the Multiple Myeloma started slowing her down, she enjoyed Hallmark movies, jigsaw puzzles, and catching up with friends and family over the phone. Patty enjoyed every opportunity to attend her children and then grandchildren’s activities and spend time with them playing board games, they will remember her competitive spirit. Patty was strong in her faith and was raised in the Nebo Nazarene Church and after marrying John, moved her membership to the Pittsfield Church of the Nazarene. She lived to serve others, always putting someone else’s needs before her own.  She was a strong, loyal, and faithful servant of God.

Patty is survived by her father, Jerald Hill of Nebo, IL; husband of 41 years, John;  two daughters Diane (Aaron) VanStrien of Goddard, KS and Deborah (Aaron) Rush of Griggsville, IL; four grandchildren, Naomi VanStrien, Liam VanStrien, Brody Rush, and Ava Rush; two brothers Darrell Hill and Kevin (Kelly) Hill; one sister Sherry (Steve) Putney; two brothers-in-law Cleve (Susanne) Curry and Kim (Lynn) Curry; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins survive. She was preceded in death by her mother, JoAnn Hill; grandparents, Vernon and Myrtle Borrowman and Willie and Lois Hill; and in-laws Charles and Muriel Curry.
