Patricia ‘Patty’ Anne Capps, age, 91, of Pittsfield, IL, passed away on Saturday May 9, 2026, at Illini Hospital. She was born on July 12, 1934, in Flint Township to William Eldon and Leona (Speer) Sleight. She married Dale W. ‘Toby’ Smith and to this union two children were born, Stephen and Stephanie. She later married Robert Capps.
Patty graduated from Griggsville High School and went on to WIU for two years. She later worked in three school districts including, Barry, Griggsville and Pittsfield. Patty was also a secretary for Cecil Burrows and then became the Assistant Manager of the Federal Land Bank Association of Pittsfield-Quincy for many years.
Patty was a longtime member of the Pittsfield United Methodist Church where she helped with various projects and activities. She was very active in her community where she was involved with the Junior Parentals, served on the Cancer Board, assisting with the yearly Cancer Drive and also served on the Community Center Board. She was a member of the Old Orchard Country Club and served as chairman of OOCC Ladies Day Golf and always enjoyed helping with the Labor Day festivities.
Patty enjoyed needlepointing, knitting, crocheting, upholstering furniture, sewing, embroidering and loved playing Bridge. She also liked golfing, water skiing, puzzles and reading. But Patty loved her family the most. She loved to attend basketball games, dance recitals, music concerts, and any other activities her grandchildren were a part of. Her family was her world and she will be missed.
Patty is survived by her daughter, Stephanie (Jerry Ator) Bess of Pittsfield, IL; granddaughters, Kristen Smith, Amy Cox, Ashlee (Michael) Nash, Emily (Katie) Fox and Erica Bess; great-grandchildren, Hayley Cox, Abigail Cox, Kaitlyn Cox, Sydnee Cox, Wyatt (Kaylee) Nash, Collin Nash, Braden Smith and Bryce Smith; great-great grandchild, Bellamy Nash; and several nieces and nephews survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son Stephen D. Smith; two sisters Norma Pool and Dalene Goewey; baby brother John Wesley and a half-sister Gladys Marie Huffman; and grandson-in-law Jeff Cox.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday May 14, 2026, at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with visitation held prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at the Pittsfield West Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to be made to the Pittsfield United Methodist Church or Pittsfield West Cemetery.
