Nell (Moorehead) Sanders

Lila Nell Sanders, age 88, of Pittsfield, IL passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Pittsfield Manor in Pittsfield, IL. She was born July 23, 1935, in Kelso, TN to Rufus Aaron and Elma Clayton Moorehead. Nell married Emmett A. Sanders June 9, 1950, in Lynchburg, TN and he preceded her in death July 26, 1999.

Nell loved the outdoors; in her early years she was a beekeeper and later in life enjoyed her flowers and gardening and canned much of her harvest. She was a member of Pittsfield United Methodist Church and enjoyed bible study and was a member of HCE and Sorosis Society. Nell owned and operated The Beauty Nook until her retirement in 1975. She had many hobbies including attending auctions and antiquing, taking cooking classes in St. Louis, and was an accomplished quilter, winning four blue ribbons at the Illinois State Fair. Nell traveled nationally and internationally and was especially fond of her trip to Ireland. She and Mardelle enjoyed many bank travel trips together over the years to destinations far and wide.

Nell is survived by daughters, Janice (Robert) Ritchart of Pittsfield, IL and Karen Sanders of Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Gabe (Jamie) Ritchart, Travis Ritchart, and Abby (Tony) Griffith; great grandchildren, Reese and Miles Ritchart, Cooper, Finnegan and Macallan Ritchart, and Owen and Maggie Griffith; and sister, Faye Tankersley Benson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Elma Moorehead; husband of 49 years, Emmett Sanders; great granddaughter, Clara Ritchart; brother, L.C. Moorehead; and sisters, Dorothy Corder, Elaine McAnally, Virginia McDonald White and Mary Jo Hall.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the graveside service from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield. Memorials are suggested to be made to West Cemetery.
