Michael Ray “Mike” Smith, age 65, of New Canton, IL, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born on August 11, 1956, in Pittsfield, IL to Raymond and Shirley (Buchanan) Smith. His first marriage was to Cathy Myers and to that union, two sons were born. He later married Karen Henson on September 4, 2003, and she survives.
Mike grew up in Baylis, IL and attended school there. When he left school, he went to work for Operator Engineers Local 965 out of Springfield, IL and was a heavy equipment operator until retiring in October 2018.
In earlier years, Mike ran derby cars and when his sons were old enough, he instructed them on “how it should be done”. He loved fishing and camping and enjoyed the outdoors. He especially enjoyed rabbit hunting with his family. He was a practical joker and tormenter, but could take it as well as give it with his great sense of humor. Mike was happiest spending time with friends and family. He is remembered for helping others without hesitation, being outspoken, and always standing up for others.
Mike is survived by his mother, Shirley Smith of Baylis, IL; his wife, Karen Smith of New Canton, IL; his sons, Jeromy (Jessica Phillips) Smith of New Canton, IL, Brandon Smith of New Canton, IL, and Tyler (Bailey Bradley) Smith of New Canton, IL; step sons, Douglas (Jennifer) Bigsby of Hannibal, MO, and William Scott (Patty) Bigsby of Rockport, IL; step daughter, Lois Ames of Quincy, IL; grandchildren, Haylee Smith, Gage Smith, Emma Smith, Autumn Bigsby, Ashley Bigsby, Alexa Bigsby, Aydan Bigsby, Abigail Davis, and Leah Ames; brothers, Larry Smith of Kingston, IL, and Mitch Smith of Baylis, IL; sisters, Gayle Morrow of Strafford, MO, Lois Calvey of Pittsfield, IL, Peggy Cawthon of Chambersburg, IL; first wife, Cathy Myers Smith of New Canton, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Smith; brother, Chuck Smith; and niece, Amy.
Celebration of Life will be held Monday, July 18, 2022 at 7:00 PM at Barry Funeral Chapel with visitation prior to the service from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
