Obituary

Maxine “JoAnn” Walker, aged 84, of New Canton, IL, passed away Monday, August 21, 2023.  She was born in New Canton, IL, to Walter and Rebecca Pearl Myers Foster on December 7, 1938.  She married Junior Dale Walker on May 6, 1957 in Hannibal, MO. and he survives.

JoAnn grew up in the New Canton Bottoms and graduated from West Pike High School in 1957. After graduation, she married Junior and began raising their family.  Throughout her life, besides being the best housewife, she worked for Motorola, at the convenience store in New Canton, and also worked in telephone sales.  JoAnn was very involved in the New Canton Harvest Festival and served on its board for many years.  She was also a trustee for New Canton township.  She was a member of the Rockport Christian Church and served as its treasurer for many years. 

JoAnn was a seamstress and also made leather goods such as purses and belts.  She loved flowers, her favorite being roses. She liked gardening, especially watching the hummingbirds and hearing her collection of windchimes as she worked outside.  She enjoyed collecting glass bells, Christmas villages, and potted plants.  She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.  JoAnn was a hard-worker and a very loving person.  She took care of everyone- raising many others besides her own children.  She was very patient, easy going and never met a stranger.  She loved her family more than anything and will be dearly missed by them.

She is survived by; her loving husband of over 66 years, Junior Dale Walker; sons, Jim (Kay) Walker of New Canton, IL, Steve (Linda) Walker of New Canton, IL, Doug Walker of New Canton, IL, Chuck (Beth) Walker of New Canton, IL, Jerry (Sara) Walker of Quincy, IL, and Joe Walker of New Canton, IL; daughter, Julie (George) Bainter of Barry, IL; 23 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; brother Richard (Amy) Foster of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by; her parents, Walter and Rebecca Foster; sisters, Jean Schwander, Alice Marie Higgens, and Sherry Tittsworth; brothers, Bill Foster, Art Foster, and Lee Foster; and daughter in law, Sally Walker.

Visitation will be Monday, August 28, 2023 from 10- 11 A.M. with the funeral service to follow at 11 A.M. at Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry, IL. Interment to follow at Samuel Taylor Cemetery in rural Rockport.  Memorials are suggested to the family c/o Niebur Funeral Chapel.
