Mavis M. Lemons

Mavis Marie Lemons, age 98, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023 at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield.  She was born on May 26, 1924 in Pittsfield, IL to Eugene and Mary Daughtery Dark.  She married Howard ‘Jack’ Lemons on November 23, 1941 in Palmyra, MO and he preceded her in death on May 29, 2014.

Mavis attended and was baptized at the Pittsfield United Methodist Church.  As a young girl, she liked going to and helping out at the church dinners.  She enjoyed traveling with her husband and reading.  She was a great cook and loved cooking for her family.  Mavis also loved her flowers and rose bush.  She worked and helped raise her grandchildren whom she absolutely adored and she loved her family.  Mavis always kept in close contact with her sister-in-law and former GTE coworker, Helen Lemons, and looked forward to their phone calls.  She will be missed.

She is survived by two sons, James ‘Cork’ (Sally) Lemons and Michael (Bridget) Lemons, both of Pittsfield, IL; two daughters, Elaine (Frank) Hoaglin of Pittsfield, IL and Beverly (Edward) Hailey of Pittsfield, IL; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren and one on the way; and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Mary Dark; her loving husband of 72 years, Jack Lemons; granddaughters, Jackie Marie Wintjen and Jamie Ann Wintjen; great grandson, Josh; and siblings, Meredith Dark, Clifford Dark, Galand Dark, and Mabel White.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Greenpond Cemetery near Pearl.  Memorials are suggested to be made to Greenpond Cemetery.  Online condolences may be left  to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
