Mary Etta Fox Obituary

Mary Etta Fox, age 90, of Griggsville Estates, formerly of Fishhook, IL passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield.  She was born on December 28, 1931 in Jacksonville, IL to Roy and Betty Mayes Dixon.  She married Robert Lee Fox on January 11, 1949 in Jacksonville, IL and he preceded her in death on February 7, 2007.

Mary Etta attended school in Jacksonville and went on to work at the Fishhook General Store before beginning the nursing program at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville where she received her LPN certification.  She worked at Illini Community Hospital for many years until retirement and then went to work at the Pike County Health Department where she retired for the second time.  Even after that, she still helped with blood pressure clinics at the health department and helped tutor kids for John Wood Community College at her home.  She also volunteered many hours taking local residents to their doctor appointments.  Mary Etta was on the board for the Senior Center as well as Pike County Unmet Needs and was a Clerk for the Fairmount Township for several years.  She was a past member of Fishhook Methodist Church until its closing and then attended church at Woodland United Brethren Church.  She was also part of many bible study groups.  In her free time, Mary Etta was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved watching games on TV.  She also enjoyed country music and watching RFD-TV.  Mostly, she loved being around her grandchildren and spending time with them.  Mary Etta was a very compassionate, loving, and friendly woman and she always lent a helping hand to anyone she could.  She will be missed.

She is survived by her two sons, Roger (Karen) Fox of Pittsfield, IL and Steve Fox of Fishhook, IL; seven grandchildren, Brian Fox of Pittsfield, IL, Bradley (Stephanie) Fox of Imperial, MO, Serra (Phuong) Fox-Nguyen of Sacramento, CA, Josh (Melissa) Fox of St. Charles, MO, Cari (Jason) Gold of Eureka, IL, Christy Kunzeman of Fishhook, IL, and Shaun Kelly of St. Louis, MO; sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Dixon of Maysville, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fox; parents, Roy and Betty Dixon; brothers, Frank Dixon, Roy ‘Sonny’ Dixon, and Robert Dixon; and daughter-in-law, Jenny Fox.
