Mary Beth Hoos Slater, age 71, of Pittsfield, IL passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at her home in Pittsfield. She was born December 30, 1952, in Pittsfield, IL to Virgil and Wilma A. Smith Hoos.

Mary Beth graduated from Pittsfield High School. She was raised in Pittsfield Methodist Church, and later became a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and most recently attended Cornerstone Church where she was baptized by Bill Smith in 2015.  Church was very important to Mary Beth, and she was strong in her faith.  Mary Beth was a friend to all she met and became family to Marie Smith’s family and enjoyed attending picnics, hayrides and family get togethers. She was always ready to go on a road trip and especially enjoyed the country music shows in Hillview. Mary Beth worked at the Pittsfield Work Activity Center stripping furniture and made many wonderful friendships there over the years. She also worked at Elm City in Jacksonville where she was considered one of their most dedicated workers. Mary Beth was involved for many years with Pike County Special Olympics earning many medals. She also enjoyed attending Night to Shine Prom events in Quincy with her friends. Mary Beth always had a special affection for children and never met a stranger. She could be loving but also very persistent and she loved unconditionally; this is the real kind of love that shines to all around you and is powerful and contagious.

Mary Beth is survived by her brother, Robert 'Bobby' Hoos of Pittsfield, IL; cousins, Phillip (Vera) Smith and Janet Smith; dearest friends, Joanne (Bob) Lacy and Rhonda (Richard) Houchins; several other cousins and friends that are family also survive; and her constant companion and loving feline, Midnight. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Wilma Hoos; uncle, Leon Smith; and best friend, Angie Crowder.

Funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM, Friday, March 1, 2024, at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with visitation held prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Pittsfield. Memorials are suggested to be made to Oakwood Cemetery. Online condolences may be left to the family at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield is handling the arrangements.
