Mary Margaret Myers passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on March 17, 2024, in Greenville, South Carolina. Born on September 29, 1930, in Griggsville, IL, to the late Charles H. and Hazel Pyle Stickman, Mary Margaret lived a life devoted to her family, her faith, and her community.
She always had a zest for life and a love for learning. Mary Margaret was Valedictorian of her 1948 Griggsville High School graduating class. The following year, she married her high school sweetheart, Ralph F. Myers, and they began their life on the family farm. They welcomed three children, Jeanette Myers Six of Greenville, SC, David (Julie) Myers of Sunrise Beach, MO, and Dan (Becky) Myers of Griggsville. They were blessed to celebrate 69 years together before Ralph’s death in 2018.
In addition to her children, Mary Margaret is survived by her brother, Richard Stickman; nieces, Lori Stauffer and Sharon Stickman of Griggsville and Ann Stickman of LaGrange, IL; four grandchildren, Justin (Kristin) Six of Greenville, SC, Jessica (Trey) Gresimer of Nashville, TN, Benjamin (Allie) Myers and Audrey Myers, of Scottsdale, AZ, step-grandsons, Brett (Allie) Shriver and Michael (Chelsie) Shriver of Quincy, IL; four great grandchildren, Leah (David) Diez of Guam, Liam and Maggie Gresimer, Miles Myers; step-great granddaughter Lilian Shriver, two great-great-great grandchildren, Gregory and Luca Diez. She was predeceased by her brother Charles H. Stickman, Jr.; her son-in-law, Gregory W. Six; sisters-in-law Dorothy Stickman and Gail Stickman; and her niece Mary C. Stickman.
She was a life-long member of Griggsville United Methodist Church. She sang soprano in the Madonna Choir for many years, helped with dinners, baked delicious tea rings for the Bazaar, and, served on, and chaired, many committees. She was also a long-time member of the church’s Needlecraft Club, Dorcas Circle and United Methodist Women. In addition to church, she was a very active member in many organizations, serving in leadership positions, as needed. Mary Margaret was a beloved Sister of P.E.O. Chapter EM-IL for more than 50 years, celebrating her Golden Girl status at the 2019 Illinois State P.E.O. Convention in Peoria. For many years, she and Ralph enjoyed playing couples’ bridge with a group of good friends from high school. She was a 1978 founding board member of Parent and Child Together (PACT) for West Central Illinois and was honored at her 40th year Anniversary in 2018. Among her other organizations were Pike County Home Extension, Abbie Hatch Chapter of Chautauqua.
To know Mary Margaret was to love her. She was a bright star in our lives—an exceptional human being who was caring and always uplifting. She was always willing to help in any way she could, be it donating her famous pies to a fundraiser, taking a carload of folks (young and old) on an outing, using her sewing skills to make beautiful garments or Halloween costumes, or picking up tractor parts. No matter what she was doing, she was always a lady but never stuffy. Mary Margaret was witty, patient, kind, unflappable, practical, always curious, gracious, appreciative and willing to go the extra mile. She never complained. She loved to go. She loved black coffee-- anytime, hot tea, fish, chocolate, popcorn, reading, music, flowers, going anywhere, laughing, learning anything new, and, especially, she loved time with her family and friends.
Receiving of friends will be held 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Griggsville United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow. After the service, interment will be at the Griggsville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Griggsville United Methodist Church or the Griggsville Cemetery Association.
