Marjorie Potter Obituary

Marjorie Ellen (Schultz) Potter, age 91, passed away at home with her husband and daughters by her side on Friday, April 25, 2025.  She was born at home on January 4, 1934, in Barry, IL to Cloyd and Glenna (Hack) Schultz.  Marge married John Oliver Potter on October 22, 1955, and he survives.  They had two daughters, Sherry (Potter) Sisk and Tammy (Potter) VonBurg.

Marge graduated from Barry High School in 1952.  She had been honored as the first Barry High School Homecoming Queen.  She went to work at Motorola in Quincy and during her tenure she was voted ‘Miss Radio”.  She also worked at the Barry Community Care as a CNA, before going to college at John Wood in the late 70’s and obtained an Associate's Degree along with her LPN license.  Marge continued to work at the nursing home and went on to work at the Illinois Veterans Home until her retirement.  She also did seasonal work at the Barry Apple Basket over the years where she enjoyed visiting with the customers.

Marge’s first and foremost title was farmwife and mother.  She was a typical farmers wife, helping with the milking, housework, cooking, moving equipment to putting up hay.  This was her day job, as she always took the night shift so she could fulfill her day job duties.  Marge loved the outdoors and gardening and working in her flowers.  But her biggest love was her family.  She enjoyed her family and gathering wherever the kids would be.  Marge could be found reading her grandchildren the Children’s Bible Story book.  She especially loved Christmas and Easter when she became one of the kids. She was artistically talented, whether it be arranging flowers or decorating with antiques.  Marge was a hardworking, determined, old school kind of woman that could be a bit stubborn at times, but will be remembered by her smiling eyes.   Marge was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Marge is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, John; daughters. Sherry Sisk and Tammy VonBurg; grandchildren, Bryan Sisk, Amy Sisk-Allison, Jon VonBurg, Cody VonBurg, Werner VonBurg IV; six great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her parents. Cloyd and Glenna Schultz; brothers Frank, Elmo and Sam; sisters, Carrie Pennewell and Mardell Swartz; in-laws, Robert and Lizzie Potter; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Nelson; son-in-law, Werner VonBurg III.
