Lyndal E. Zumwalt, age 79, of Wentzville, MO, formerly of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Peters, MO. He was born on May 9, 1944 in Hartford, IL to Hal and Ova Ellis Zumwalt. He married Joyce Troutner on September 25, 1986 in Pittsfield, IL and she survives.
Lyndal graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1962 and moved with his family to California where they ran a Tastee Freeze. There, he attended Fullerton College for a year before joining the United States Army from 1965 until 1967. After returning to Pike County, he began working as a secretary for Kermit Klinefelter at Illini Hospital. Lyndal spent the majority of his working career at GTE and retired after 41 years of service. Throughout his life, he also helped on the family farm with his dad and helped with the development of the Lakeview Heights subdivision near Pine Lakes. He was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church and the Lion’s Club. Lyndal loved his life with Joyce and they traveled together frequently to Branson. He played on many softball and bowling leagues, was exceptional at roller skating, and enjoyed fishing and hunting of many kinds. He also liked riding his motorcycle and was known for being the best at frying food. Lyndal was an avid collector of AC tractors and mallard ducks. He and Lyn also made many memories at St. Louis Cardinals games. Lyndal was his family’s biggest supporter and loved telling jokes and making people smile. He never had an unkind word to say and will be missed by so many.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 37 years, Joyce Zumwalt; son, Lyn (Sara) Zumwalt of Gibson City, IL; two daughters, Christie (Gary) Mendenhall of Pittsfield, IL and Angie (Mike) Dodson of Lake St. Louis, MO; nine grandchildren, Brandon Zumwalt, Jake Zumwalt, Hannah (Brian) Roig, Alayna (Luke) Justice, Noah Mendenhall, Eli Mendenhall, Mairyn (Nathaniel) Thomason, Madisyn (Tim Hairer) Dodson, and Aidan Dodson; seven great grandchildren, Cadience Roig, Audriana Roig, Ezra Justice, Jack Justice, Mellie Justice, Jedidiah Justice, and Avery Thomason; brother, Tom (Donna) Zumwalt of Pittsfield, IL; sister, Pam (Dan) VanHecke of Pittsfield, IL; aunt, Lee Powell of Springfield, MO; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Greg) Dickerson of Quincy, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with interment to follow at Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service on Monday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to be made to Pittsfield First Christian Church.
