Lewis Richard Dyer, age 86, of Pittsfield, IL passed away Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, IL. He was born January 4, 1937, in Pittsfield, IL to Ira Jackson and Thelma Hayden Dyer. Richard married Wilma J. Stewart April 21, 1954, and she preceded him in death September 7, 2001. He later married Norma Jackson McCann on February 14, 2002, and she survives.
Richard graduated from Nebo High School class of 1954. After graduation, he worked at Brown Shoe Factory and then went on to work at Hercules Inc, retiring in 1996. After his retirement, he worked as a bank courier and delivered bulk newspapers. In the early 70’s he began his lifelong career as a livestock farmer, raising cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats; basically, anything with four legs! Richard enjoyed country music shows, bus trips to Branson and vacations with his family. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and could often be found at farm and livestock auctions. He was a faithful member of Barry Church of Christ for over 50 years and especially enjoyed attending Sunday School. Richard was a member of Pike County Farm Bureau and was loyal to the Republican Party. He was an independent, boisterous and ornery man who loved his family dearly; and could get along with anyone who accepted that he was always right!
Richard is survived by his wife of 21 years, Norma Dyer; sons, Kevin (Diana) Dyer of Pittsfield, IL, Alan (Vivien) Dyer of Pendleton, IN and Jay Dyer of Pittsfield, IL; stepchildren, Robert (Pollyann) McCann and Annette (Doug) Whitlock; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; brother, Junior (Sharon) Looper; sisters, Patty Wright and Virginia (Gene) Smith; sisters-in-law, Sue Dyer and Irma Calhoun; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Thelma Dyer; stepmother, Ann Dyer; wife of 47 years, Wilma Dyer; son, Stan Dyer; brother, Jack Dyer; sisters, Mardell Bryant, Josephine Benjamin, LaDonna Davis and Carlene Renoud.
