Kent D. Brunenn

Kent D. Brunenn, age 83, of Barry, IL passed away August 8, 2023, surrounded by his adoring family.   He was born March 27, 1940 in Fort Madison, IA to Earl Homer Grant Brunenn and Virginia Marie Gabel Brunenn. He married Marie Maxine Dolbeare on June 14, 1959 in El Dara, IL, she survives.

Kent grew up in West Point, IL before the family moved to Barry, IL in 1952.  He graduated from Barry High School in 1958.  Following in his much admired, maternal grandfather’s footsteps, Kent served in the US Navy from 1958 until 1964Following   This service was a source of pride, life lessons, and endless stories to be told.  As a third-generation grocer, Kent worked alongside his family from a young age at their stores, Brunenn & Son, Keifer’s and K&E Super Valu.  He and Maxine owned and operated K & E Super Valu for over 30 years.  Kent enjoyed focusing on his true passion, farming, for the last 20 years of his life.

Kent had a strong commitment to his community.  This was evident not only in his dedication at the store, but also with the Barry Fire Department, Barry Apple Festival and Barry Housing Authority. In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing baseball and softball, whether at Barry High School or with many local area teams.  Kent was an avid and respected fur trapper, always willing to share his knowledge and experience with others.  His quick wit will not be forgotten, nor the endless supply of wry comebacks and commentary.

Kent is survived by; his loving wife of 64 years, Maxine Brunenn of Barry, IL; daughter Lori McCuen of Atlanta, GA; and granddaughter, Katie of Atlanta, GA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Virginia Brunenn.

Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M.to 7:00 P.M., Monday, August 14, 2023 and the funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, August 15, 2023 with interment to follow at Parklawn Cemetery in Barry, IL.  Memorials are suggested to the Barry Fire Department or the Barry Museum.  Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
