Katherine N. (Daniel) Ballenger

Katherine N. Ballenger, age 101, formerly of Winchester, IL passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Griggsville Estates in Griggsville, IL. She was born November 7, 1922, in Scott County, IL to Wilburn Francis and Louise Eleanor Ehlert Daniel. Katherine met the love of her life, Leonard Ballenger at a dance in Winchester. They married on January 24, 1946, in Manhattan, KS where he was stationed with the U.S. Army, and he preceded her in death August 7, 1984.

Katie attended Winchester Community High School and graduated with the class of 1941. After WWII was over, Leonard and Katie settled in Jacksonville, IL. Katie worked with the JC Penney company in Jacksonville for 22 years and retired in May 1981. Katie made her home in Florence, IL and was featured in a book about people living along the Illinois River. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville and Florence United Methodist Church. Katie was a talented artist who enjoyed oil painting landscapes, and many are blessed to have one of her paintings in their home. She was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed reading, needlework, quilting and crocheting. She was very involved in her community and was an original committee member to start the Pike County Fall Color Drive.

Katherine is survived by son, Lawrence ‘Larry’ (Linda Wylie) Ballenger of Carbondale, CO; sister, Peggy (Jan) Blue of Jacksonville, IL; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Eleanor Daniel; husband, Leonard Ballenger; son, Hurley Ballenger; daughter, Natalie Armistead; infant son, Leon Ballenger; brother, Jack Daniel; and sister, Louise Harshman.

Graveside service will be held at 1:30 PM, Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Blue River Cemetery in Detroit, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to Blue River Cemetery. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield is handling the arrangements.
