Johnny Ray Howell, age 63 of Barry, IL passed away Thursday, July 31, 2025, at his home. He was born June 16, 1962, in Pittsfield, IL to Vincent Dean and Ima Lee Chaplin Howell.
Johnny grew up in Barry and attended Barry schools. After graduation he enlisted in the Army National Guard as a sharpshooter and served his country for 15 years. Johnny was a truckdriver working for Tate Cheese and Cruttenden and also worked for Bob Parrack and Rocky Sally. He was considered a jack of all trades and did several odd jobs in the area over the years. Johnny enjoyed spending time outdoors mushroom hunting, picking blackberries, and in earlier years enjoyed hunting. He dearly loved his dogs, Gunner, Tig and Lucy and his cat, Stinky. Johnny could be a little stubborn but had a heart of gold and would help anyone in need.
Johnny is survived by sons, Matthew (Tabitha) Howell of Manchester, IL and Samuel (Rebecca) Howell of Missouri; daughter, Michelle (Sean) Wellman of Pittsfield, IL; seven grandchildren; sisters, Bertha Badgley, Grace (Mitchell) Rayner, and Carol (Bob) Ward; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Ima Howell; brothers, Vincent Wayne Howell and his twin in infancy, Howard K. Howell; brother-in-law, Steve Badgley; and niece, Mandy Bowen.
Cremation rites have been accorded, and a Graveside Service with military honors will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 11, 2025, at Samuel Taylor Cemetery in New Canton, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to Pike County Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry is handling the arrangements.
