Obituary

John L. McLaughlin, age 87, of Griggsville, IL passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.  He was born on December 2, 1935, in Fairmont Township to Melvin O. and Grace Josephine Laird McLaughlin.

John was a lifelong farmer and after retirement, he worked for Moss Farms.  He was proud to have been able to run the first Quad Tracs for Case IH.  He was very active in his community serving on the Griggsville School Board for 16 years and was Chairman of Two Rivers RC&D Forest Committee.  He was also a member of the Pike and Adams Counties Farm Bureau, Pike County Promenaders, Pike County Extension Council, and Pike County Pork and Beef Producers.  He served as a PASA Range Officer and worked for IDOT in the winter.  John was also a member of the NRA, Jaycee’s, and the Hinman Cemetery Board.  In his free time, he loved to attend ball games his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nephews participated in.  John spent many weekends at baseball games in Indianapolis and wherever else there was a game, he wanted to go.  He loved quail and deer hunting as well as teaching about guns and hunting to future generations.  In later years, John enjoyed shooting and riding the side-by-side, especially with Kalie and Joley who liked to try and get him wet when crossing the creek.  He loved to have cookouts with family out at the farm but no matter where they were, his greatest joy was spending time with his family.  John will be missed.

He is survived by his son, Craig (Paula) McLaughlin of St. David, IL; cherished friend, Estella Zilic of Griggsville, IL; two grandsons, John Paul McLaughlin of Macomb, IL and Joseph (Desire) McLaughlin of Lewistown, IL; great grandchildren, Joley Evyn McLaughlin of Lewistown, IL, Kalie Grace McLaughlin, Deagan John McLaughlin and Taylen Avenlee McLaughlin, all of Macomb, IL; three nephews, Tom Plattner, Todd (Melanie) Plattner and John David Plattner; several great nieces and nephews and five great-great nephews; and several cousins and numerous close friends who he considered family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Josephine McLaughlin and sister, Sarah Jo Plattner.
