Jerry Herschel Johnson

Jerry Herschel Johnson, age 83, of Good Samaritan Cottages in Quincy, Illinois, and formerly of Barry, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.  He was born on August 26, 1942 in Barry, Illinois, to Herschel A. and Belva (Saunders) Johnson. Jerry married Bonnie McMillin on September 21, 1962 at the Chapel of the Roses in Bonita, California, and she survives.

He graduated from Barry High School in 1960 and then enlisted into the U.S. Navy in August of 1966, stationed in California. After being honorably discharged, Jerry worked for Rohr Aircraft Industry in Chula Vista, California and came back to the Barry area working at several industries including Moorman’s, Electric Wheel and Gardner Denver. For 20 years he was custodian at the Barry School and after retiring he later mowed several yards in town. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing, hunting, cutting and splitting wood and up to until a year ago he planted a vegetable garden. Jerry watched Westerns, especially Gunsmoke and later enjoyed walking and playing with his dogs. His family and friends were very important to him. He loved to call and visit with his grandchildren. Jerry will be remembered as a honest, loyal, independent but a bit stubborn, hardworking, genuine man who loved his family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Bonnie; son, Michael (Kristi) Johnson of Olathe, Kansas; daughter, Jerilyn Owens of Quincy, Illinois; grandchildren, Jeremy (Anna) Johnson, Jenna (Cody) Wren, Jared Johnson, Jamie (Mason) Adkins and Matthew Owens; great-grandchildren, Oliver Johnson, Everett Johnson, Beckett Johnson, Cooper Wren, Easton Wren, Hudson Wren; in-laws, Genevie Johnson, and Charles (Rose) Cauthon Jr.; several nieces and nephews; a great-nephew; and his Morkie dog, Daisy.

Jerry was preceded by his parents; a great-grandson, Benjamin Johnson; in-laws, Charles Cauthon Sr. and Mary Cauthon; and a brother-in-law, Don Johnson.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 11:00 am at Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry, Illinois.  Interment following at Parklawn Cemetery, Barry, Illinois. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025 from 4:00- 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Home, to the care of Niebur Funeral Chapel.
