James ‘Jim’ M. Lewis, age 68 of Baylis, IL passed away Sunday, March 2, 2025, at his home. He was born May 13, 1956, in Pittsfield, IL to Frank and Wanda Duggins Lewis. Jim married Starla Clarkson August 31, 1974, at Pittsfield United Methodist Church and she survives.
Jim was a 1974 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Over the years, he worked for Paving Materials, Callender Construction and Valley Improvement Construction Company. Jim also drove a truck for Carnes Trucking, Gerard Brothers, and LSSD Trucking. He was the New Salem Road Commissioner for the last 14 years and was known at work as ‘Gear Head’. Jim was a member of the Baylis Fire Department and later became a First Responder, trustee for Village of Baylis, and a member of Pike County Saddle Club. He was an avid horseman who loved sharing his love of horses with his family. Jim was meticulous about his yard and loved to mow, often helping others tend to their yards; and enjoyed working on tractors and lawnmowers. He was a hardworking man with a strong work ethic and enjoyed visiting and helping others. He will be remembered best as a man who loved his family deeply, taking great pride in his grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Starla Lewis; son, Tony Lewis of Baylis, IL; grandson, Dana (Justine) Lewis of Baylis, IL; great grandsons, Ross Lewis and Preston Lewis; brother, Tom (Mandy) Lewis; sister, Cynthia (David) Forshey; stepsister, Dixie Alvies; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Wanda Lewis; brother, Frankie ‘Chuck’ Lewis; and stepsister, Janice.
Services will be held privately. Memorials are suggested to be made to Baylis Cemetery. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield is handling the arrangements.
