Helen Lee Aiken, age 85 of Pittsfield, IL passed away in her home Wednesday, October 11, 2023. She was born in Pittsfield, IL on April 13, 1938, to Donald Lee and Meradel Sanderson Winston. Helen first married Harold Capps and to this union three children were born. Helen married Curtis Aiken June 20, 1980, in Pittsfield, IL and he preceded her in death January 10, 2010.
Helen was a 1955 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1969 when she took over the Green Acres Motel from her mother. Helen continued the family legacy as owner and operator until her retirement in 1997. Helen taught piano lessons for many years, had a passion for reading, and took great pride in her flower garden. After retirement she took up golfing, was an avid bridge player in multiple clubs, and always enjoyed her porch time or “5 o’clock wine time” with friends and family. She also belonged to Book Club and was a longtime member of Old Orchard Country Club where she served on the board. Helen was a spunky, opinionated lady with a huge and giving heart who will be deeply missed by friends and family. Many will remember her famous line, “I feel duty bound to tell you how to do or what you should do!”
Helen is survived by children, Lisa (Jeff) Cox of North Carolina and Dean (Nancy) Capps of Pittsfield, IL; sister, Ruth (David) Bennett of Pittsfield, IL; grandchildren, Adam (Juli) Cox, Sarah (Robby) Denbow and Jeremy (Bailey) Capps; step-grandchildren, Ryan (Erin) Howland and Bryan (Samantha) Howland; great-grandchildren, Liliwyn Cox, Selah Cox, Noelle Cox, Abraham Denbow, Atlas Denbow, Lylah Denbow, Lila Capps and Noah Capps; step-great-grandchildren, Avery Howland and Adley Howland; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Meradel Winston; husband, Curtis Aiken; and daughter, Lila Capps.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with visitation held prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at Pittsfield West Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to be made to West Cemetery. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
