Helen Carol Butler, age 80, of Rockport, IL passed away Monday, April 11, 2022, at her son’s home in Independence, MO. She was born November 20, 1941, in Rockport, IL to Elmer Wayne and Helen Dallas Smith Ward. Carol married Roger Leo Butler September 15, 1964, in Pittsfield, IL and he survives.
Carol grew up in the Rockport area and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1959. She also attended Quincy College and Gem City Business College. She worked for the State of Missouri Highway Department and worked in management at Woolco. Carol and Roger moved back to Pike County, she worked as a waitress for a short time. In earlier years she loved to work in her flowers until her health would no longer allow it. She loved to shop for clothes, shoes and jewelry; it was her obsession. Carol and Roger enjoyed going out to eat, especially for a good steak and loved catfish on Friday nights in ‘Dosh. She loved morel mushrooms, not hunting them but eating them and was never afraid to tell a waitress her food wasn’t hot enough! They spent many hours going to the river to watch the barges and eagles and she loved to take inventory of the local deer population. Roger and Carol were true soulmates, he lovingly called her ‘Puss’. Together they were the perfect couple, he worked to provide for the family while she raised the kids. She was fun and loving and never afraid to give her opinion. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren and will be deeply missed by all.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Roger Butler; three children, Gary (Shelly) Butler of Independence, MO, John Butler of Orlando, FL and Shauna Wynn of Independence, MO; ten grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; sister, Cheryl (Jim) Lanning of Crosby, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Helen Ward; and granddaughter, Jessica Butler.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service. Interment will follow at Samuel Taylor Cemetery in Rockport, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to Alzheimer’s Association. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
