Gordon Truman Scranton, age 83 of rural Detroit, IL passed away Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, IL. He was born January 21, 1941, at home in Bee Creek in Pearl, IL to Truman Herman and Mildred Wheeler Scranton. Gordon married Bonnie Sue Wright in December 1963, at the Detroit Methodist Church and she survives.
Gordon worked for Everett Pennock hauling and spreading lime, Callender Construction, Freesen Brothers, and traveled around several states working on the pipeline as a heavy equipment mechanic before retiring and working on the family farm. Gordon was a loving grandfather who took delight in spending time and playing with his grandkids. Gordon was a character who was an ornery, happy go lucky guy, loved to tell jokes and many will remember his entertaining reign as ‘Miss Corny’ at the Milton Corn Carnival. He and Bonnie were talented square dancers and cloggers and he loved calling as much as dancing. He could always be found riding horses in local parades and loved his faithful companion, Peanut. Gordon enjoyed time spent at home checking on his cows, swinging on the front porch, and riding his mower and gator. In his spare time, he loved tinkering with his hands, watching westerns and listening to country music.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bonnie Scranton; sons, Walter R. ‘Wally’ (Sheoni) Scranton of Griggsville and Gordon ‘Tim’ (Paula) Scranton of Griggsville; daughter, Lori Sue (Shane) Sibley of Detroit; grandchildren, Kennard Scranton, Correy (Lora) Scranton, Shawn (Ashley) Scranton, Ashley (Kendal) Hannant, Sam Scranton, Cory (Amber) Allen, Staci (Tyler) Smith, Stephanie (Marc) Norris, Destiny (Cody Lahr) Smith, Jack (Brianna Ruble) Sibley, Kristen Sibley, Sarah (Andy) Pennock, and Shane, Jr. (Michael) Battles; nineteen great grandchildren; brothers, Cecil Scranton and Glyn Scranton; and sisters, Dorothy Henson, Janet Aupplin, and Mary Ann Charlton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Truman and Mildred Scranton; brothers, Smithie Scranton, Larry Scranton, and Rex Scranton; and sisters, Lowetta Scranton, Shirley Ewing, Paula Gaullier, Lynn Vollmer, and Audrey Trabue.
