Glendell 'Gene' Nevius

Glendell ‘Gene’ Nevius, age 94 of Pittsfield, IL passed away Monday, March 3, 2025, at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy, IL. He was born November 15, 1930, in Kampsville, IL to Harlan Albert and Mary Irene Oden Nevius, Sr. Gene married Irene Hull February 1, 1952, in Pittsfield by Rev. Brown and she survives.

Gene was drafted into the United States Army in February 1952 and served his country until his honorable discharge in January 1954. Gene worked as the City of Pittsfield Gas and Water Supervisor for over 38 years. Never one to sit idle, after retirement he worked for Zimmerman Brothers picking up and delivering vehicles, was the first Uber driver in Pike County, and made many trips driving Ed Hartzell and other area folks to their appointments; he especially enjoyed the Quincy trips because they would usually include a stop at the Village Inn. Gene always liked working on cars and enjoyed mowing his yard, loved to travel and had visited every state except two with Colorado being his favorite. Gene was a member of Pittsfield American Legion Post #152, enjoyed watching Westerns and he and Irene enjoyed square dancing. He dearly loved his kids and grandkids and eventually grew to love his family’s dogs also. Gene will be fondly remembered by the community as friendly, polite and always ready for a good visit.

Gene is survived by his wife of 73 years, Irene Nevius; son, Michael (Cecelia) Nevius of Pittsfield, IL; daughter, Beverly (Ray) Miller of Pittsfield, IL; grandchildren, Chris (Mandy) Miller, Patrick (Jami) Miller, Ryan Nevius, and Morgan Nevius; great grandchildren, Caylee (Bobby) Stark, Austin Miller, Catherine Miller, Mason Miller, Molly Miller, and Graysan Howland; and many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Mary Nevius, Sr.; and brother, Harlan Albert ‘Bud’ Nevius, Jr.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, March 7, 2025, at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with visitation held prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Gray Cemetery with funeral honors accorded by the United States Army and Pittsfield American Legion Post #152.  Memorials are suggested to be made to Gray Cemetery or Pittsfield American Legion Post #152.
