George Robert Smith

George Robert Smith, age 78, of Barry, IL, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2025.  He was born on July 30, 1947 in Pike Co. IL to Richard L. and Marian L. (Hathaway) Smith.  He married Sandra K. Selvy  in Quincy, IL on October 24, 1975, and she preceded him in death on March 16, 2024. 

George graduated from West Pike High School in 1966.  He joined the US Army, receiving a Sharpshooter Badge and a Purple Heart amongst numerous other medals during his service and was honorably discharged in 1968.  He went to work at Moorman ADM and worked in the shipping department for the next 41 years before retiring.  George also farmed in Pike County, IL. 

He was a courageous and caring man who always put his family first.  George was a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and also enjoyed spending time with and going to the casino with Sandra- they would’ve celebrated 50 years together this year.  He loved animals and watching Fox News.  He will be dearly missed. 

George is survived by; daughters, Carrie (Christopher) Moore of Barry, IL, and Jennie Smith of Collinsville, IL; brother, Kenneth (Debra) Smith; sister, Dorann (Joe) Fesler; sister in-law, Joye Smith; several nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Bella.

He was preceded by; his parents, Richard and Marian Smith; sister, Clara E. Kasten; brothers, John “Bill” Smith and Richard “Leroy” Smith; and nephew, Travis Smith.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 17 at 10:30 am at Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry, IL.  Visitation will be Tuesday, December 16, 2025 from 4:00-6:00 pm at Niebur Funeral Chapel. Interment to follow service at Shiloh Cemetery in rural Plainville, IL.  Memorials are suggested to Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) or Homeward Bound.  Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry, IL is handling the arrangements.
