Evert C. Poyner, age 79, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. He was born on October 28, 1944, in Success, Arkansas to Oval and Parelee Arnold Poyner. Evert married Ruth E. Skirvin on January 17, 1973, in Mazon, IL and she survives.
After graduating from High School, Evert served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the 101st Airborne Paratroopers. He served for two years before being honorably discharged. Evert went to work at a truck stop in Morris, IL where he met his wife Ruth as she was working in the restaurant of the truck stop. He then went on to work for the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy and moved up the ranks to lieutenant. He then became Chief of Police for the city of Mazon and after 30 years of service he retired at the age of 56 ½. After retirement Evert and Ruth relocated to Pike County, IL to be closer to her family. He loved to dance and in the 80’s he taught country and western dance classes. Dancing was a huge part of their life, and they travelled all over the area. He was also an avid golfer, fisherman, and truly enjoyed rides around the countryside with Ruth. Evert was a wonderful husband, father, and Papa. He was family oriented and loved his family dearly.
Evert if survived by his loving wife of 51 years Ruth; son Rick (Diane) Storey; grandchildren, Jacob Storey, Jessica Storey, Christopher Storey, and Christopher Heyer; great grandchildren, Cameron Storey, Teia Storey, Zaxton Barenz, Aurora Storey, Oliver Storey, Evelyn Storey, Willow Trimmer-Serda, and Ulton Storey; three brothers Orris (Norma) Poyner, Ron (Trudy) Poyner and Lonnie Poyner. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Donald ‘Arkie’ Poyner, Johnny ‘Pooch’ Poyner; sister Dawn ‘Sis’ Bulion and three brothers in infancy.
Per Everts wishes cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no services. Memorials are suggested to be made to the Pittsfield American Legion Post #152. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield, IL is handling the arrangements.
