Ethel M. Tholen, age 79 of Griggsville, IL passed away Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Griggsville Estates. She was born April 7, 1944, in Beardstown, IL to Roy and Dorothy Westfall Hobson. Ethel first married William D. Waters and to this union three children were born; she later married Harmon ‘Bud’ Tholen in Mason City, IL and he preceded her in death.
Ethel grew up in Valley City, IL and attended Griggsville schools and was a graduate of Griggsville High School. She lived in Peoria and raised her three children and was a homemaker her entire life. Ethel later moved her family to Mason City where she met and married her husband Bud and after his passing, she moved back to Pike County. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, camping and listening to country music. Ethel always liked a good cold beer and conversation with friends and playing card and board games. She loved spending quality time with her grandkids making memories over the last few years.
Ethel is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (Dallas) Crawford of Griggsville, IL and Billie (Mike) Johnston of Pekin, IL; ten grandchildren, Paul McDonald, Cassandra Bolton, Trenton Slight, Taylor Werries, Blake Tholen, Austin Ewing, Hailie Johnston, Hunter Johnston, Gavin McDaniel and Nathan Jones; great grandchildren, Colton, Treeca, Westley, Karsyn, Falyn, Ariella, Paiten, Linkoln, Delilah, Rheuben, Noah, Isaac, Chaddum, Maverick, Braxton, Lincoln and Hattie; and her good friend, Jim Oldham.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Dorothy Hobson; husband, Bud Tholen; daughter, Teresa McDaniel; twin boys in infancy; grandson, Brock; great grandchild, Hendrix; and brother, Carroll Gene ‘Beaner’ Hobson.
Cremation rites have been accorded and funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM, Friday, January 19, 2024, at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with visitation held prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to be made to the family c/o Niebur Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
