Earl graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1961. He was very active in FFA and the 4-H program passing his knowledge on to his children. Earl enlisted into the US Army serving his country as a combat engineer during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in September 1967. After returning home he went back to farming at Loyd Farms where he was a lifelong grain farmer and raised thousands of hogs over the years. He also worked at Logan Agriculture for several years.
