Dr. Jean M. Kirk

Dr. Jean Marie Kirk, age 89, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at her home.  She was born on April 22, 1932 in Waterloo, IA to Thomas Greer and Helen Marie Legan Morgan.

Dr. Jean graduated from Rock Island High School and went on to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic graduating on December 15, 1966 with a Doctorate in Chiropractic.  She relocated to Pittsfield and started her practice in October 1967, retiring on April 22, 2019 after 52 years.  During her career, she loved learning and expanding her knowledge in the field ranging from veterinary chiropractic to acupuncture and was one of the first to bring acupuncture to not only Pittsfield, but the state of Illinois.  She also had some of her research published in the Walter Reed Journal.  Dr. Kirk was very dedicated to her career and always made each of her patients a priority.  Besides her job, she was very active in her faith and church and was a member of the Pittsfield Church of the Nazarene.  She served on various boards over the years, was a past Sunday school teacher, and played the French horn during church well into her 80’s.  She also shared her faith globally, attending work and witness trips to Haiti.  In her spare time, Jean was a talented artist who painted primarily with oils and pastels.  She was also a musician and played several instruments, but specialized in the French horn and Cornette.  Further, she was an avid horseman showing her horses and trail riding. Dr. Kirk had a mind of her own and was incredibly career driven, hardworking, and family oriented.

She is survived by her children, Rebecca Lee of Indianapolis, IN, Dr. Dan (Anita) Mefford of Griggsville, IL, and Roxanne Cawthon of Perry, IL; stepson, Don (Annelle) Kirk of Pittsfield and step daughter-in-law, Linda Kirk of Griggsville, IL; nine grandchildren, Christy (David) Toler of Indianapolis, IL, Autumn Cullen of California, Kody (Amy) Mefford of Monmouth, IL, Carson (Mindy) Mefford of Pittsfield, IL, Kit Mefford of Griggsville, IL, Steve (Michelle) Cawthon of Ward, AR, Amber (Jason) Freesmeyer of Hamburg, IL, Stacey Burnett of Griggsville, IL, and Kyle (Brooke) Cawthon of Winchester, IL; twenty great grandchildren, as well as seven step grandchildren and twenty-three step great grandchildren; and an aunt, Elizabeth (Ross) Buyers of Franklin, IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Helen Morgan; grandchildren, Jason Parks and Kipp Mefford, as well as twin grandchildren in infancy; brother, Tom Morgan; and stepson, Jack Kirk.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 12:00 PM at Pittsfield Church of the Nazarene.  Interment will follow at Gray Cemetery near New Salem, IL.  Visitation will be held prior to the service on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the church.  Memorials are suggested to be made to Gray Cemetery or the Pike County Animal Shelter.  Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
