Dolores J. Dempsey, age 91, of Pittsfield, IL passed away Monday, September 25, 2023, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born December 27, 1931, in Mendon, IL to John Herman and Mary S. Tenvorde Dittmer. Dolores married Robert F. Dempsey October 18, 1952, at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Mendon, IL and he preceded her in death August 3, 2008.
Dolores graduated from Mendon Unity High School in 1949. Upon graduation she went to work at the Quincy Peoples Savings and Loan. After her youngest began school, she worked at Sandidge Studio doing portrait touch ups. Dolores went back into banking, working at the Pittsfield branch of Quincy Peoples Savings and Loan where she became Vice President. At age 55 she enrolled in John Wood Community College and earned her LPN degree. Dolores had a natural knack for caring for others and was an animal lover. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a dedicated Altar Society member who could always be counted on for assistance at funeral dinners and sewing projects such as baptismal cloths, alter cloths and priest vestments. Dolores was a charter member of Pike County Dance Club, Book Club, treasurer for HCE for several years, member of several Bridge Clubs and was a drive collector for American Heart Association. Dolores had many hobbies including antiquing, quilting, crocheting, gardening and canning her harvest. She loved her family and will be dearly missed by all.
Dolores is survived by two sons, Mark (Denise) Dempsey of Springfield, IL and Jeffrey (Sally) Dempsey of Hoover, AL; three daughters, Jane (Rodney) Fralicx of St. Louis, MO, Marti Jo (Daniel) Peasley of Stronghurst, IL and Annie (Mike) Baker of Jacksonville, IL; eleven grandchildren, Katie (Mike) Brendel of St. Louis, MO, Abigail (Jack) Watts of Rogersville, MO, Lesley (Joe) Dillard of Chapin, IL, Maranda (Rich) Hymes of Springfield, IL, Kelsey (Nick) Weitzel of Boonville, MO, Joey Peasley of Melbourne, FL, Andrea (Braden) Henze of Highland, IL, Laura (Steven) Heizer of Minot Air Force Base, ND, John Dempsey of Highland, IL, Jennifer (Chris) Williams of Chandlerville, IL and Mike Blair of Springfield, IL; fourteen great grandchildren with one on the way; sister, Rosemary Ashbaker of O’Fallon, IL; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Dittmer; husband of 55 years, Robert Dempsey; grandsons, John Michael Dempsey and Michael Paul Dempsey; brothers, Junior Dittmer, Harvey Dittmer, Robert Dittmer and Donald Dittmer; and sister, Dorothy Shilt.
Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with interment to follow at West Cemetery in Pittsfield, IL. Prayer Service will be held at 4:00 PM on Friday, September 29, 2023, with visitation to be held immediately following from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Memorials are suggested to be made to St. Mary’s Altar Society or West Cemetery. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
