Dennis C. Workman, age 86 of Pittsfield, IL and formerly of Griggsville, IL passed away Monday, July 7, 2025, at Calhoun Nursing and Rehab Center in Hardin, IL. He was born May 31, 1939, in the hallway at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL to Dennis and Arlene Jones Workman. Dennis married Evelyn Likes December 3, 1960, in Quincy, IL and she survives.
Dennis was a United States Navy veteran proudly serving his country from 1956 to 1960. He served on the USS Roanoke and loved to be on the seas. After his honorable discharge, Dennis spent many years farming for John Swartz and worked for the Illinois Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector and then finished out his career working for Longhorn Confinement Systems. Dennis was a longtime member of the Pittsfield Church of the Nazarene but currently attended the Nebo Church of the Nazarene where his son, Darin pastors. Over the years Dennis was a dedicated and faithful member of his church, serving as an usher, custodian, Sunday school teacher, and always enjoyed attending Sunday school in Nebo. Dennis loved being outdoors, especially when running a chainsaw; he also enjoyed traveling, mushroom hunting, fishing, was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, and was always ready to go for a ride, no matter the destination. Dennis cherished time spent with his family and took special delight in his grandchildren. He was a gentle giant and a simple man who put his family first and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Evelyn Workman; children, Denise (Jason) Conkright of Griggsville, IL, Dennis (Michelle) Workman of Barry, IL, Diane (Mitch) Vose of Griggsville, IL, Darcy Westfall of Quincy, IL, Sharon (Richard) Lane of Anchorage, AK, Devin Workman of Jacksonville, IL, and Darin (Lori) Workman of Pleasant Hill, IL; grandchildren, Dr. Kendra (Derek Oitker) Conkright, Dennis Logan Workman, Kayla (Jerred) Spann, Chase (Megan) Vose, Chance Vose, Jennifer (Greg Lash) Warren, Emily Heininger, Elizabeth Heininger, Isaac Workman, Hannah Workman, Daniel Workman, Dylan Workman, Drew Workman, and Larissa Workman; ten great grandchildren; sisters, Pearl McGowin and Sharon (Ernie) Quitasol; brother, Bill (Annie) Workman; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Arlene Workman; grandson, Travis Conkright; sister, Rosie Haigopian; and in-laws, Bennie and Alene Likes.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 14, 2025, at Nebo Church of the Nazarene with visitation held prior to the service from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church. Interment will follow the service at Bethel Cemetery in Griggsville, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to Nebo Church of the Nazarene.
