Charles Hirsheimer of Northbrook, IL peacefully passed on December 12, 2025, at age 88 years old. He was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Quincy, IL to loving parents Marguerite and Lambert Hirsheimer.
Charles considered himself to be the luckiest person to have the good fortune to be raised in Pittsfield, IL. He graduated high school from Lake Forest Academy Prep School and then went to Western Illinois University where he earned a BS degree. In January 1961, he volunteered for the draft and went to the US Army where he served until January 1963, and three years in the reserves. In 1963, he returned to Western Illinois University where he earned his Master of Arts Degree in History. After earning his Masters, Charles went to Chicago, IL where he met his loving wife Barbara in May 1966. They were married May 5, 1968, and moved to Northbrook, IL in July 1982, to raise their family.
They have two wonderful children; David married to Linda and Jennifer married to Matt. Jennifer and Matt have two loving children John and Michelle. Charles is survived by his brother Lambert, married to Carol.
Charles and Barbara enjoyed coming to Pittsfield over Memorial Day Weekend visiting his parents’ graves. Charles and his wife Barbara, who passed on January 1, 2025, will join his father Lambert who died in January 1953, and mother Marguerite who died in October 1991, at the West Cemetery in Pittsfield.
While in Pittsfield, he was fortunate to visit the most loving and wonderful friends, John and Bonnie Petty, Carolyn and John Ormond, Bob and Teresa Frazier, Helen Aiken, Kay Miller, Carol McCarter and Chuck Barber. John Petty has said Charles may have left Pittsfield, but he had left one foot in Pittsfield to find his way back.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Sunday, December 21, 2025, at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield, IL with visitation held prior to the service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Pittsfield West Cemetery with military honors. Memorials are suggested to be made to Pike County Historical Society.
