John Kelley, Sr., age 83, of New Salem, IL passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. He was born on March 6, 1938 in Murrayville, IL to James Russell and Letha Ballard Kelley.  He married Lois Phillips on February 26, 1964, and she survives.

John went into family farming at an early age, farming the majority of his life and was drafted into the United States Army, serving in Germany.  John later worked as the New Salem Township Road Commissioner for 20 years, retiring in 2008.  He was presented the 50-year Membership Award of the Griggsville American Legion Post #213 in March 2021 and participated in the Honor Flight in 2015.  He enjoyed shooting trap, mushroom hunting, and watching Westerns with Lois.  John was a quiet and simple man who loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois Kelley; son, John (Jamie) Kelley, Jr. of Griggsville, IL; daughter, Crystal (Kevin) Pate of Williams, IA; three grandchildren, Ryan Kelley of Griggsville, IL, Jenna Kelley of Griggsville, IL, and Andy Pate of Webster City, IA; and two sisters, Rita Whitlock of Pittsfield, IL and Norma Jean Harmison of Springfield, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Letha Kelley; son, Tim Kelley; sisters, Mary Brickey and Mardell Maynard; and brothers-in-law, Harley Whitlock, Carl Brickey and David Maynard.

Services will be held privately and cremation rites have been accorded.  Memorials are suggested to be made to the Griggsville American Legion Post #213.  Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
