Larry Leon Collins, age 63, of Pittsfield, IL, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was born on January 14, 1957, in Louisiana, MO, to Paul and Marjorie Zumwalt Collins. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan Slight, on March 20, 1977, in Griggsville, IL, and she survives.
Larry graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1975 and went on to work for Callender Construction Company for 34 years. He then went to work for Pike Wood Products, where his passion for woodworking began. After his retirement in 2018 from Hammitt Custom Farming you could find him in his woodshop building custom pieces for his family and friends. Larry was a good and faithful servant of the Lord. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pleasant Hill, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of Carpenters for Christ and served as a past Captain for the Pittsfield Fire Department. He was devoted to his family and friends and will be remembered for his quick wit and never knowing a stranger.
Larry’s greatest joy was his grandchildren. He was proud to be a “Pop” and loved every minute he spent with his grandkids. Larry’s other passions include his woodworking, building instruments and playing his banjo at bluegrass festivals. Larry also enjoyed St. Louis Blues hockey, NASCAR, and weekend camping trips with Susan.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan Collins; their three daughters, Dee Vandermolen of St. Peters, MO, Joni (Adam) Schlieper of Dunnellon, FL, and Lisa (Michael) Hobbs of Pleasant Hill, IL; his father, Paul Collins of Pittsfield, IL; six grandchildren, Zachary Schlieper, Zane Schlieper, Cora Vandermolen, Jase Hobbs, Maci Hobbs, and Joel Hobbs; brother, Michael (Jill) Collins of Pittsfield, IL; and sister, Betsy (Rocky) Bland of Pittsfield, IL.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Collins, and a brother, Douglas Collins.
A public visitation will be held on Friday, January 8, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Pleasant Hill. Per COVID guidelines, social distancing and masks are required. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to be made to Carpenters for Christ ℅ Cherry Street Baptist Church, 520 Cleveland Ave., Attalla, AL 35954. I'm so sad to hear of Larry's passing. I had the priviledge of caring for Larry and for some reason, he was one of those patients that just reached in and touched my heart. We had a couple good chats, prayers, and even a communion service with a fellow nurse who serves as a preacher in his community. Please accept mine and all of our condolences on behalf of all of the covid hospital staff at Hannibal Regional Hospital. He had only the best things to say about all of his family, especially his wife.

Susan and family, condolences at this sad time. Paul and Betsy, I did not realize your family relationship, prayer and thoughts for you all. The obituary pictures a guy for all to be proud. As a Son, brother, husband and father he will sadly be missed. His church family and community will feel a void as well. I wish you the love of family, friends, and your Faith in God to comfort and console you in this time of sorrow. Sincere Sympathy, Bonnie
