Carroll Dean Cox “Coxie,” age 80, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Eastside Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Pittsfield.  He was born on November 29, 1939 in Pearl, IL (Greenpond, IL), the fourth child of Fred Wesley Cox of Pittsfield, IL and Sarah Robinson Cox of Elsberry, MO. Carroll married Susan (Standley) Cox in California in 1964, and she survives.

Carroll graduated from Pittsfield High School, Class of 1959.  He enlisted in the United States Army in 1960 and attended basic training in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.  He served in the Cold War in Iceland, and was a Marksman and Sharp Shooter.  Carroll received a Good Conduct Medal for his service.  He attended Finance School while at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indiana.  His last year in the Army was at the Presidio in San Francisco, where he worked in the Finance Corp.  After his Honorable Discharge from the US Army in 1963, he stayed in San Francisco and worked at Wells Fargo Bank where he met his wife, Susan.  After moving back to Illinois, he worked for Brown Shoe Company as a Time Study Engineer, and later worked at Oscar Mayer as a Quality Control Inspector.  Carroll was also a livestock and grain farmer, retiring in 2005.  Carroll was also President and co-owner of Illinois Wind Power, LLC.

Carroll enjoyed traveling, golfing at Old Orchard Country Club, playing cards, and dancing.  He was the life of many parties and knew how to have a good time.  He loved life and his family, and always had a joke to tell.  He was an active member of The Moose Lodge #420, the American Legion Post #152, and Old Orchard Country Club where he served twice on the board and was a past President.  He was a member of Pittsfield United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed volunteering for the Annual Turkey Dinner and any other occasion as needed.  He also volunteered at Illini Fitness and was elected to the Pittsfield Township board as a Trustee serving for three years.  Carroll was a charter member of the Cardinal Inn, McDonald’s, and Hardees’ coffee clubs.

Carroll is survived by his wife of 56 years, Susan Cox; three children; a son, Steven Robert Cox of Pittsfield, IL, and twin daughters, Deborah Ann (Curt) Renoud of Pittsfield, IL and Melissa Jean (John) Hoffman of Springfield, IL.  Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Benjamin Renoud, Emily Hoffman, Jason Cox, Brian Renoud, Lauren Hoffman, Brady Renoud, and Thomas Cox, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Keith Lloyd Cox and Freddie Leroy Cox; and sister, Phyllis Irene (Cox) Webster.

The Cox family would like to say thank you to the Pittsfield Community, friends, and family for their love and support since Carroll’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2012.  He had great care from the staff at Eastside Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and the family will be forever grateful.

Funeral services will be held privately.  Memorials are suggested to be made to Pittsfield United Methodist Church or to Eastside Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Activity Fund.  Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Susan and family:

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Carroll. I fondly remember him as the good natured jokester that always had a good joke to tell.

Please accept my profound sympathy. May God bless each of you during this time. Keep the many good memories of him close to your hearts forever.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I know how much Carroll meant to you all, I could see it every time that I helped take care of him when I worked at Illini. He was such a kind man I could see it even through his disease. I know it was not easy on you all to see him that way and take care of him. May God give you comfort and peace during this difficult time as you lay him to rest. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
