Music by The Piano Brothers

Lura Mildred Irene Hammitt, age 98, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Barry Community Care Center in Barry, IL.  She was born on August 28, 1921 in Fishhook, IL to James and Zella Bowman Miller.  She married Robert Hammitt on September 3, 1941 in Bowling Green, MO and he preceded her in death on December 17, 2008 after 67 years of marriage.

Lura graduated from Clayton High School and worked for some time as a dental assistant in Clayton, IL.  She then began working as a waitress at Fitzhenry & Cates Service Station in Pittsfield, IL where she met Robert Hammitt, married him three weeks later and they began their family.  Lura loved her family dearly and enjoyed taking care of them.  She was once employed by DCFS as a home maker aid, helping young mothers learn how to properly care for their children and manage their home.  She also owned and operated Hammitt Lakeview Cottages at the Pittsfield Lake.  Lura was a wonderful cook, she liked quilting, and she always had beautiful flowers in her yard.  She played piano by ear and was still playing until the last week of her life.  Lura was a past Sunday school teacher and was a member of the New Testament Church of Christ.  In 1986, Robert and Lura were honored by the Home Extension Service as the Illinois Family of the Year. Lura always said there is “nothing more important than family” and she had a love for children, not just her own.  Lura had an infectious smile, a forgiving and patient heart, and she loved unconditionally.

She is survived by her sons, Robert (Phyllis) Hammitt Jr. of Pittsfield, IL, John (Becky) Patterson of Warren, MI, Larry (Sandy) Wingington of Pittsfield, IL and Jeffrey (Angie) Hammitt of Pittsfield, IL; daughters, Judy (Calvin) Warpula of Pittsfield, IL, Jan (Ed) Brokaw of Abilene, TX, Julie (Pete) Hammitt of Elk Grove Village, IL, and Angela (Kevin) Bolick of Granite Falls, NC; daughter-in-law, Patti Hammitt of Nixa, MO; twenty-four grandchildren, sixty-three great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Mardelle Hammitt of New Salem, IL, Lois Anne Hammitt of Quincy, IL, Thelma Hammitt of Pittsfield, IL, and Mary Anne Heightman of Pittsfield, IL.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Hammitt; her son, William Hammitt; her parents, James and Zella Miller; brothers, Ray Miller, George Miller, and Robert Miller; and sisters, Pauline Havens and Marjorie Williams.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield.  Interment will follow at Pittsfield West Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Friday, September 20, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Barry Community Care Center or Blessing Hospice.  Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

To tell you we are sorrowful, is not quite that. She was like my 3rd Mom and Dean and I loved her so much.
I kept up with her on your Facebook posts.
Please know we hurt almost as much as you kids do.
Know you have our deepest sympathy and our love.

Please accept this condolence as a means of expression to all of you. Lura was the finest example of a loving Christian woman I have ever known. My many precious memories I will always treasure. Your family, each and everyone was her glory, tho likely in line after Her Lord Jesus and her beloved Robert. I have met and come to know many of you. Should I not get to see some of you at the services please know how impressive your Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother was to me. You must be very proud to have been Blessed with her.
