Harvey “Shad” Whittaker, age 88, of Perry, IL passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.  He was born on April 27, 1930 in Perry, IL to Harvey and Grace Riley Whittaker.  He married Maxine “Pete” Shelden on June 18, 1955 in Perry, and she survives.

Shad graduated from Perry High School in 1948, where he played several sports.  He joined the United States Army in 1952 serving in the Korean War with the 3rd infantry division and played the baritone in the Army band.  He was Honorably Discharged in 1954.  Shad was self-employed with Mobil Oil for about 40 years providing bulk fuel and oil to local homes and farms.  After retirement, he drove for Bader Ag Services.  He was a past Commander of Perry American Legion Post #1040, a charter member of the North Pike Fire Department, served on the Village Board of Perry, and was a past Master of the Perry Lodge AF&AM Lodge 95.  He was also a past President of the Pike County Shrine Club, and a past member of Ansar Shrine Bagpipe Band and Pike County Federal Housing Authority.  Shad was a past board member of the Old Orchard Country Club where he and Pete loved to golf, a past umpire of IHSA, and a volunteer baseball coach from Little League through American Legion teams.  He and Pete were named the Perry Pioneer Day Honored Citizens, and Shad was also a certified Scuba Diver.  He loved the St. Louis Cardinals baseball and football teams, and always kept up on the “Perry-Griggsville” sports teams.  Shad never missed a sporting event at Perry or Illinois School for the Deaf that his children were involved in.  He and Pete bowled for many years at the Perry Bowling Alley and also enjoyed travelling to Hilton Head in earlier years, as well as visiting the Lake of the Ozarks several times a year.  In later years, Shad spent most of his time guarding his fireplace and watching the happenings at Perry School outside his window.  He was a very loving and kind dad, and never knew a stranger.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Maxine; two sons, Scott (Janet) Whittaker of Lexington, IL and Steve Whittaker of Perry, IL; two daughters, Robin (Tom) Wainman of Pittsfield, IL and Susie (Brian) Drake of Jacksonville, IL; ten grandchildren, Jeremy Johnson, Jessica (Jason) Todd, Mallory Wainman, Jacob Whittaker, Shannon Whittaker, Haley Whittaker, Laura Whittaker, Neva Whittaker, Ashley Drake, and Riley Drake; eight great grandchildren, Zoey, Isaac, Natalie, Elizabeth, Kamden, Trenton, Jonas, and Ada; and a brother-in-law, Robert Huheey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Shell Whittaker; and a sister, Mary Ann Huheey.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Masonic services.  Visitation will be held prior to the service on Saturday from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM.  Interment will be at a later date.  Memorials are suggested to Shriner’s Hospital or the Perry Presbyterian Church.  Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.  Niebur Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

We are so deeply sorry to hear of Shad's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your families. We have such fond memories of your family--how welcoming and loving you all were when we were brand new to Perry. Things would not have ever been the same for us without all of you. Dear Pete and family, I'm so sorry to hear about Shad. I'll always remember Shad with fond memories of working with him at Bader Ag, and him always getting those wagons delivered to Alan on time, and to the "right spot". I'll be sure to have a Foster's in honor of Shad.
Love to you all,
Rhonda and Alan
